Microsoft<\/a>\u00a0is preparing another price increase for the\u00a0Xbox<\/a>\u00a0Series X\/S according to an insider, due to the rising costs of components.<\/p>\n

Despite launching over five years ago, the Xbox Series X\/S has never been more expensive than it is today.<\/p>\n

Microsoft\u2019s console originally launched at \u00a3449 for the Xbox Series X and \u00a3249 for the Xbox Series S in November 2020, but despite being a\u00a0massive sales flop<\/a>, both console variants have\u00a0risen in price<\/a>\u00a0in the UK by \u00a350. If you\u2019re in the US, the increases are even worse, with the Xbox Series X going up by $150 overall.<\/p>\n

These hikes aren\u2019t exclusive to Microsoft consoles, with\u00a0Sony<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0PlayStation 5<\/a>\u00a0being\u00a0similarly impacted by US tariffs<\/a>, but the Xbox Series X\/S might be subject to another price jump soon, due to the rising costs of components.<\/p>\n

This all stems from an agreement by\u00a0Samsung<\/a>\u00a0and supplier SK Hynix, who recently signed a deal to supply around 40% of the world\u2019s DRAM (dynamic random access memory) output to the US\u00a0artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0company OpenAI for its Stargate data centres.<\/p>\n

This deal has reportedly led to a scramble for DRAM among other companies, resulting in rising costs and shortages. According to a report on\u00a0Chinese outlet Ctee<\/a>, DRAM prices have shot up 171% year-on-year.<\/p>\n

While several companies are expected to be affected by these increases, according to\u00a0YouTuber<\/a>\u00a0Moore\u2019s Law Is Dead, Microsoft\u2019s Xbox is going to suffer more than most.<\/p>\n

Speaking about Xbox, Moore\u2019s Law Is Dead said: \u2018They didn\u2019t plan ahead at all, apparently. If you still want an Xbox, for some reason, at their current pricing, those prices could go up soon, or supply could just entirely dry up.\u2019<\/p>\n

He goes onto claim that several of his sources have been warned by sales reps at Microsoft that \u2018this is going to affect the Xbox Series consoles very, very soon, sooner rather than later\u2019.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s important to take this with a pinch of salt, if you\u2019re looking to buy an Xbox Series X\/S, you might be better off grabbing one in the Black Friday sales, in case this does come true.<\/p>\n

Moore\u2019s Law Is Dead named several other companies which could be affected by the DRAM shortage, like Radeon and Nvidia, but according to the YouTuber\u2019s sources, Sony will not be as badly impacted.<\/p>\n

\u2018From what I\u2019ve heard, Sony planned ahead, bought up gobs of RAM near the bottom of the pricing, and thus they should be fine for months,\u2019 he said. \u2018They have plenty of GDDR6. At least, that\u2019s what I\u2019m told.\u2019<\/p>\n

He goes onto state prices for the PlayStation 5 could \u2018go up eventually\u2019, citing next year as a possibility, but there\u2019s no immediate cause for concern.<\/p>\n

While this looks set to affect the price of current gen consoles in some fashion, it\u2019s unclear if this could negatively ricochet onto the prices of Sony and Microsoft\u2019s next gen hardware too, which are\u00a0expected to come out in 2027<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X\/S were both marred by a slow transition from the previous generation, so if the next gen consoles are priced astronomically, with very little in the way of visible improvements, the\u00a0PlayStation 6<\/a>\u00a0could have an even bigger uphill battle.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also possible that both companies could simply choose to delay the new consoles, which have not been officially unveiled, by a year or so, in an attempt to ride out the current problems.<\/p>\n
