Graham Linehan<\/a>\u00a0has been cleared of harassment but found guilty of criminal damage to transgender activist Sophia Brooks\u2019\u00a0mobile phone<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Father Ted co-creator, 57, flew in from Arizona to appear at Westminster Magistrates\u2019 Court in person on Tuesday, where District Judge Briony Clarke delivered the judgment.<\/p>\n

His\u00a0trial began at Westminster Magistrates\u2019 Court<\/a>\u00a0in September, where he had denied both charges in relation to an incident in October 2024.<\/p>\n

He denied harassing the activist on\u00a0social media<\/a>\u00a0between October 11 and October 27, 2024. Meanwhile, the criminal damage to their mobile phone is said to have taken place on October 19 of the same year.<\/p>\n

The criminal damages claim detailed that he allegedly damaged her \u00a3369 mobile phone at the Battle of Ideas conference \u2013 an annual event hosting public debates across a wide range of issues.<\/p>\n

Prosecutor Julia Faure Walker\u00a0also detailed the harassment charges during the trial.<\/p>\n

In a summary of her judgment, Clarke explained that while Linehan\u2019s social media posts \u2013 which the activist was not tagged on \u2013 were \u2018deeply unpleasant, insulting and even unnecessary\u2019 they weren\u2019t \u2018oppressive or unacceptable beyond merely unattractive, annoying or irritating\u2019.<\/p>\n

She concluded the conduct didn\u2019t count as harassment, nor was the complainant as distressed as they claimed to be.<\/p>\n

She added, in the charge of criminal damage, that Linehan was \u2018angry and fed up\u2019 when he deliberately whacked Brooks\u2019 phone to the ground in a confrontation outside the venue.<\/p>\n

The Irish comedy writer has become widely known for his strong and vocal stance towards the transgender community.<\/p>\n

As the court heard last month, he claimed his\u00a0\u2018life was made hell\u2019 by trans activists, adding that the complainant was a \u2018young soldier in the trans activist army\u2019.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the court also heard that the teen activist had asked Linehan: \u2018Why do you think it is acceptable to call teenagers domestic terrorists?\u2019 to which Linehan called her \u2018groomer and disgusting incel\u2019.<\/p>\n

She then replied: \u2018You\u2019re the incel, you\u2019re divorced.\u2019<\/p>\n

In a statement during the trial, Linehan called Brooks \u2018misogynistic, abusiveand snide\u2019, adding that he wanted to \u2018destroy [their] anonymity.\u2019<\/p>\n

In May, when the hearing for the case took place, Linehan declared he had \u2018lost a great deal\u2019 but \u2018would not waver in his resolve\u2019.<\/p>\n

The trial started shortly\u00a0after Linehan was arrested<\/a>\u00a0and later released on bail on \u2018suspicion of inciting violence\u2019\u00a0over three X posts in April in a completely separate incident.<\/p>\n

The Met Police confirmed he was investigated on a non-crime hate incident, but \u2018no further action will be taken in this matter\u2019 and no charges brought against him on this allegation<\/p>\n

After nationwide discourse was sparked, Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said in a statement that \u2018a more stringent triaging process to make sure only the most serious cases are taken forward in future \u2013 where there is a clear risk of harm or disorder\u2019.<\/p>\n
