All departure\u00a0flights<\/a>\u00a0are being cancelled at\u00a0Belgium<\/a>\u2019s biggest airports tomorrow due to a nationwide\u00a0strike<\/a>\u00a0over austerity.<\/p>\n

The three-day walkout, which affects airports and public transport, is being held in protest at government plans to change labour laws on benefits and pensions to tackle the country\u2019s growing debt.<\/p>\n

Despite starting yesterday (Monday, November 24), the strike is set to cause the most chaos to flights on Wednesday, November 26.<\/p>\n

Brussels<\/a>-Zaventem Airport, which is the biggest in Belgium, will cancel all departures and 110 of the 203 incoming flights, a spokesperson told Reuters.<\/p>\n

He added that it will be up to airlines to reroute the cancelled flights and that no cancellations are currently expected among the remaining 93 incoming flights.<\/p>\n

This affects around 30 flights to the UK, according to SkyRefund, as airlines including\u00a0BA<\/a>,\u00a0easyJet<\/a>\u00a0and Brussels Airlines all operate flights there.<\/p>\n

This means hundreds of passengers will be forced to make alternative arrangements.<\/p>\n

Brussels South Charleroi Airport \u2013 primarily used by\u00a0Ryanair<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 is also being affected by the cancellations.<\/p>\n

No flights will arrive or depart, according to a\u00a0statement on the airport\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Flights run to Brussels from several UK airports each day, including\u00a0London Heathrow<\/a>\u00a0(which sees 49 per week, according to\u00a0FlightRadar24<\/a>),\u00a0Gatwick<\/a>,\u00a0Stansted<\/a>,\u00a0Luton<\/a>\u00a0and Southend, as well as\u00a0Manchester<\/a>,\u00a0Edinburgh<\/a>\u00a0and Newcastle.<\/p>\n

Railway services from the national operator, SNCB, will be disrupted for all three days of the strike. Fewer trains will run from 10pm on November 23 until the end of the day on November 26.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, the City of Brussels has warned of \u2018disrupted services\u2019 on its public transport links throughout the three days of action.<\/p>\n

Transport company De Lijn, which operates in Flanders, has advised that there will be \u2018fewer bus and tram services\u2019.<\/p>\n

Eurostar<\/a>\u00a0has also warned of potential disruption, saying some of its\u00a0international services had suffered delays<\/a>\u00a0as a result.<\/p>\n

This will have a knock-on effect for Brits travelling from\u00a0London\u00a0St Pancras.<\/p>\n

Several trains were cancelled or delayed yesterday, with more expected today and tomorrow.<\/p>\n

The country had already been hit by several strikes since Prime Minister Bart De Wever de Wever, a Flemish nationalist, came to office in February at the head of a centre-right coalition government aiming to cut the budget deficit.<\/p>\n

Early on Monday, his government reached a budget agreement which he said was the only way to \u2018guarantee the sustainability\u2019 of Belgium\u2019s welfare state.<\/p>\n

Defending the action, general workers union FGTB said a demonstration in Brussels two weeks ago had been met with \u2018total silence\u2019 from the government.<\/p>\n

What are my rights if my flight is cancelled?<\/h2>\n

According to the\u00a0Civil Aviation Authority<\/a>, UK and EU airlines must look after you if your flight is delayed or cancelled.<\/p>\n

This includes everything from meals and accommodation to an alternative flight if necessary.<\/p>\n

Citizen\u2019s Advice says<\/a>\u00a0that airlines should also give impacted passengers access to\u00a0phone\u00a0calls and emails and, if they offer you a place to stay, organise the journeys between the hotel and the airport.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, the airline will cover this by handing you vouchers at the airport. When in doubt, keep any receipts for expenses and claim them back afterwards from the airline.<\/p>\n

But an airline will only cough up money for \u2018reasonable\u2019 expenses. The hotel minibar or penthouse suites likely can\u2019t be expensed.<\/p>\n

If you didn\u2019t book with a UK or EU airline, you\u2019ll need to check their terms and conditions. However, for the most part, airlines should provide meals and accommodation as appropriate.<\/p>\n
