Expansion is possible, but the water problem cannot be solved.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Warnings about the city\u2019s water usage have gone ignored for years, and a drought has made water resources even more fraught.<\/p>\n<p>Pezeshkian said it is possible to bring in water supplies from the Persian Gulf, but it would be costly and take time.<\/p>\n<p>But is moving a capital city even possible? Tehran wouldn\u2019t be the first city to move due to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/climate-change\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">climate change<\/a>, but the issues it faces could be difficult.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1080\" src=\"https:\/\/badvibes.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SEI_273960822-6d3d-300x200.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/badvibes.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SEI_273960822-6d3d-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/badvibes.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SEI_273960822-6d3d.webp 646w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dr Bayes Ahmed, Associate Professor in Risk and Disaster Science at UCL, told BAD VIBES<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>that it\u2019s not just Tehran facing these issues.<\/p>\n<p>He points out communities in India, Southeast Asia, Bangladesh, Africa and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Many local communities are frequently relocating because of the climate crisis. By climate crisis, we mean both natural and human-induced factors that are involved.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ahmed points out the<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/07\/31\/this-country-will-underwater-2050-citizens-entering-a-bleak-competition-escape-2-23796282\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\">\u00a0agreement between Tuvalu and Australia<\/a>, which is allowing citizens to migrate to Australia before the country is swallowed by the sea.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We need to investigate what\u2019s happening in other countries and learn from them because some are relocating, some are adapting, some are not\u2014they\u2019re staying, and they\u2019re facing the challenges,\u2019 he explained.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where could Tehran move to?<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1081\" src=\"https:\/\/badvibes.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SEI_275634352-423c-287x300.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/badvibes.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SEI_275634352-423c-287x300.webp 287w, https:\/\/badvibes.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SEI_275634352-423c.webp 646w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian government named the Makran region in southeastern\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/iran\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Iran<\/a>\u00a0as a potential new capital, but this has not been confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>That area could alleviate overcrowding, energy issues and water issues. Makran is near the Gulf of Oman.<\/p>\n<p>But this isn\u2019t an ideal solution \u2013 the underdeveloped area is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iranintl.com\/en\/202511209098\">exposed to some security risks and would cost billions of dollars.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What other cities have been relocated due to climate change?<\/h2>\n<p>Indonesia\u2019s capital city, Jakarta, announced plans to relocate after sinking into the ground,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/06\/20\/32-000-000-000-plan-move-a-capital-city-jeopardy-21070655\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\">becoming the first city to relocate due to climate catastrophe.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sitting on swampy land, it is the fastest-sinking city in the world, with the Java Sea lapping against it as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/climate-change\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\">climate change<\/a>\u00a0takes its toll.<\/p>\n<p>The plan to move the capital city to Nusantara, a new city almost 900 miles north of the current capital, will be done by 2045.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ahmed explained: \u2018Why are people relocating from Jakarta? The number one reason is overpopulation. Jakarta has 42 million people, the largest population globally for any single city.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018And the city is sinking every year by 25 centimetres due to uncontrolled groundwater extraction and a rise in sea levels.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s pricey \u2013 the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/british-government\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\">government<\/a>\u00a0is investing an estimated $32 billion for the new capital in the jungles of East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hoped the capital won\u2019t be moved again, as construction is focused on sustainability, renewable energy and minimal carbon emissions. A similar move could be made in Tehran.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are there any alternatives to relocating Tehran?<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1082\" src=\"https:\/\/badvibes.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SEI_273932012-e047-300x200.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"585\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/badvibes.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SEI_273932012-e047-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/badvibes.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SEI_273932012-e047.webp 646w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t seem like it. Last week, Tehran\u2019s Amir Kabir Dam was at only 8% capacity, and the city is cutting water pressure.<\/p>\n<p>There are fears that taps could run completely dry if the city doesn\u2019t get rain soon, but even then, the damage is done.<\/p>\n<p>Overreliance on groundwater has also caused groundwater tables to collapse. Failing reservoirs are also to blame.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ahmed adds: \u2018Climate change is not a localised problem \u2013 it\u2019s a global phenomenon. You cannot think about how to resolve the climate crisis from one singular viewpoint.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We have to think about why the governments are stepping backwards. We signed the Paris agreement in 2015, but it\u2019s failing.
