The\u00a0Home Office<\/a>\u00a0is rolling out a revamped\u00a0passport<\/a>\u00a0design from next week \u2014 with\u00a0<\/strong>one very noticeable change.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the first \u2018wholly new design\u2019 since 2020, according to the\u00a0government<\/a>, although fresh looks tend to be introduced every five years or so.<\/p>\n

This new look however, is intended to usher in a \u2018new era\u2019 for travellers.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the lowdown on everything you need to know about the new UK passport.<\/p>\n

What does the UK\u2019s new passport look like?<\/h2>\n

The first and change that you\u2019ll notice on the new passports is that the late\u00a0Queen Elizabeth II<\/a>\u2019s Coat of Arms has been replaced on the front cover.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s right, this is the first wave of new passports bearing bearing His Majesty\u00a0King Charles III<\/a>\u2019s Coat of Arms.<\/p>\n

Then, once you open the passport, instead of the current geometric pattern, you\u2019ll see the four nations of the UK represented through images of UNESCO-protected natural landscapes.<\/p>\n

The four sites pictured are\u00a0Ben Nevis<\/a>, the\u00a0Lake District<\/a>,\u00a0Three Cliffs Bay<\/a>, and the\u00a0Giant\u2019s Causeway<\/a>.<\/p>\n

King Charles III has been to Ben Nevis before, notably when he took a trek in the foothills with the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team in 1987, and he visited the Giant\u2019s Causeway in June 1996 where he was pictured sitting on the basalt columns.<\/p>\n

The King is said to have a special relationship with the Lake District, too, making almost annual visits to\u00a0Cumbria<\/a>, since 2001.<\/p>\n

There\u2019ll also be cutting-edge holographic and translucent features, making passports easier to verify and even harder to forge or tamper with.<\/p>\n

With this anti-forgery technology, the Home Office claims it\u2019s the \u2018most secure British passport ever produced\u2019.<\/p>\n

Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Mike Tapp says: \u2018The introduction of His Majesty\u2019s Arms, iconic landscapes, and enhanced security features marks a new era in the history of the British passport.<\/p>\n

\u2018It also demonstrates our commitment to outstanding public service \u2013 celebrating British heritage while ensuring our passports remain among the most secure and trusted in the world for years to come.\u2019<\/p>\n

When are the new passports being introduced?<\/h2>\n

These swanky new passports will be rolled out from\u00a0Monday December 1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It means that by the end of the decade, red passports, a relic often regarded fondly by Remainers, will be out of circulation entirely.<\/p>\n

The UK switched from the burgundy cover to the dark blue in 2020, post-Brexit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Do I need to get this passport?<\/h2>\n

UK travellers can continue to use their current passport as normal. It\u2019s still valid, and the new design won\u2019t have any impact on how or where you can use the passport you currently hold.<\/p>\n

However, when it is time to renew, you\u2019ll receive the new design.<\/p>\n

It always worth checking the validity of your passport ahead of your next trip.<\/p>\n

In the first 6 months of 2025 over 3.8 million passports were issued, with 99.7% of applications where no further information was required being processed within 3 weeks, so it\u2019s not as painful a process as it may sound.<\/p>\n

Currently it costs \u00a394.50 to renew or replace your passport online, or \u00a3107 if you use a paper form. The new passports won\u2019t cost any more than the current version.<\/p>\n

How do post-Brexit travel rules affect UK travellers?<\/h2>\n

Since the UK has now left the\u00a0European Union<\/a>, travelling to Europe and the Schengen Zone comes with some complications, as UK passport holders are now \u2019third-party nationals\u2019.<\/p>\n

This means that your passport now needs to be issued less than ten years before your arrival date to the destination.<\/p>\n

These rules apply to Brits travelling to all EU member states, except Ireland. They also apply to other countries in Europe\u2019s Schengen area, such as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, and Monaco.<\/p>\n
