It\u2019s that time of year already, the countdown to\u00a0Christmas<\/a>\u00a0has begun, with an early favourite for\u00a0number one\u00a0<\/a>emerging.<\/p>\n

Last Christmas saw Wham take the win despite hot competition from\u00a0Mariah Carey<\/a>\u00a0and Tom Grennan, who even\u00a0got a pre-emptive celebratory tattoo.<\/a><\/p>\n

This year, a new song from\u00a0McFly<\/a>\u00a0star\u00a0Tom Fletcher<\/a>, written for\u00a0Paddington The Musical<\/a>, is the bookies\u2019 favourite.<\/p>\n

One Of Us, which is also sung by Tom, 40, dropped last week with a music video featuring the beloved bear at Paddington Station.<\/p>\n

\u2018A Christmas number one race isn\u2019t complete without the arrival on the starting blocks of a bona fide legend,\u2019 said Official Charts Company chief executive Martin Talbot.<\/p>\n

\u2018The vision of Paddington taking on this year\u2019s diverse gaggle of new festive chart contenders, alongside seasonal classics from The Pogues, Mariah (Carey) and Wham!, will be something to savour.\u2019<\/p>\n

The musical is currently previewing at the Savoy Theatre in London\u2019s West End, with Amy Ellen Richardson starring as Mrs Brown, who sings the song.<\/p>\n

Michael Bond\u2019s bear is brought to life through an on-stage performer (Arti Shah) and an off-stage remote puppeteer (James Hameed).<\/p>\n

Tom, who has been touring with McFly and rival band Busted this year, wrote the music for the stage show, with the album set to be released in March 2026.<\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0Radio Times<\/a>, the Star Girl hitmaker shared: \u2018Dougie [Poynter] and Harry [Judd] came to one of the workshops early on, they\u2019ve heard all the songs because they wanted to test to see if they\u2019d cry \u2013 they did.<\/p>\n

\u2018Honestly, McFly have been so supportive of this, as we all are with our separate projects. But I think they know how special this one is and they\u2019re really excited to come along with their kids.\u2019<\/p>\n

Special guests, the Prince and Princess of\u00a0Wales<\/a>, shook hands with Paddington Bear after the\u00a0Royal Variety Performance<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday night, and also met the McFly star.<\/p>\n

Prince William told Tom he thought the performance of the new musical was \u2018fantastic\u2019, before pointing to the marmalade sandwich in the bear\u2019s paw, and saying: \u2018Your sandwich looks very nice.\u2019<\/p>\n

Paddington has had a connection with the royal family since he appeared in a sketch with the late Queen Elizabeth II to mark her platinum jubilee in 2022, which saw her reveal she kept marmalade sandwiches in her handbag.<\/p>\n

However, Paddington\u2019s Christmas number one isn\u2019t certain with some serious competition from the likes of\u00a0Kylie Minogue<\/a>,\u00a0Ed Sheeran<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Sabrina Carpenter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Even Denise Welch has released a festive track, Slayyy Bells, in collaboration with Celebrations, in hopes of landing the coveted slot.<\/p>\n

The number one race has long been dominated by\u00a0LadBaby\u2019<\/a>s charity singles, which took over\u00a0the assumed win from X Factor.<\/a><\/p>\n

However, with both out of the way, there\u2019s renewed interest in the festive chart competition.<\/p>\n

Children\u2019s characters who have previously reached the festive summit of the UK singles chart include Mr Blobby, who topped the table in 1993, and Bob The Builder, who reached the peak in 2000 with Can We Fix It?.<\/p>\n

Paddington, first published in 1958, has seen a number of adaptations over the years, including a BBC TV version in 1976 voiced by the late Sir Michael Hordern.<\/p>\n

More recently, there were movies released in 2014, 2017 and 2024 \u2013 which all performed well at the box office.<\/p>\n
