More and more London teenagers are becoming radicalised \u2013 but how can you tell if your child is one of them?<\/p>\n

When they\u2019re behind closed doors, your children could be viewing extreme content online and being groomed to commit acts of terror.<\/p>\n

Telltale signs could be that you\u2019ve noticed them become more angry all of a sudden, they\u2019re secretive about who they speak to on the internet, or have become increasingly intolerant of different opinions.<\/p>\n

Parents have been urged to be \u2018vigilant\u2019 about their children\u2019s online activity amid a surge in Prevent scheme referrals in\u00a0London<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The latest\u00a0Home Office<\/a>\u00a0figures have revealed a 38% increase in referrals from April 2024 to March 2025 in the capital, with the majority of those cases involving under-18s.<\/p>\n

Police said Islamist extremism is the \u2018predominant\u2019 ideology for which individuals are referred for in London while far-right politics concerns most cases nationally.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Metropolitan Police<\/a>\u00a0has now warned parents that with \u2018more and more children having access to the internet through their\u00a0phones<\/a>, there is an increased risk they may be exposed to dangerous and harmful material that could lead them down the path towards radicalisation\u2019 and committing acts of terrorism.<\/p>\n

Detective superintendent Jane Corrigan, the Met\u2019s London Prevent co-ordinator, told Metro: \u2018Say you had a child who was\u00a0autistic<\/a>, who was spending a lot of time online, who\u2019d become very withdrawn from the house, who was very angry and refusing to go to\u00a0school<\/a>, who had concerns around their\u00a0mental health<\/a>, maybe suicidal ideation, and started sounding like they were speaking like somebody else.<\/p>\n

\u2018They are classic signs that that individual is probably being groomed or radicalised towards terrorism.<\/p>\n

\u2018We know there are young people who are spending a lot of time in their bedrooms, we have parents who don\u2019t feel confident to be able to talk to their children about what they\u2019re doing online.<\/p>\n

\u2018And we\u2019ve seen online spaces are almost certainly an accelerant.\u2019<\/p>\n

Acting on \u2018instinct\u2019<\/h2>\n

Police have advised parents that the best way to tackle the issue is to have non-judgemental, open conversations with their children \u2013 such as around the dinner table.<\/p>\n

Detective Corrigan warned under-18s accessing extremist content on the internet and speaking to the criminals who create it is similar to children meeting strangers in the park late at night, which parents \u2018wouldn\u2019t allow\u2019 them to do.<\/p>\n

She said parents should act on instinct, adding that many Prevent referrals are made \u2018too late\u2019 and \u2018not early enough\u2019.<\/p>\n

Parents can seek help from\u00a0Act Early<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a 24\/7 helpline manned by specially trained officers who people can share their concerns with in confidence.<\/p>\n

Dr Joe Whittaker, a cyber threats expert at Swansea University, told Metro parents concerned about what their children are accessing online should try and find out exactly what the content is without \u2018snooping\u2019 and in a way which is \u2018not judgemental\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018The one thing we\u2019ve learned in 20 years of trying to prevent terrorist radicalisation via messages is that shame and authoritarian finger-wagging is very likely to be not only not effective but counterproductive,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Having an \u2018open conversation\u2019 is the best way for parents to approach the subject.<\/p>\n

Social media tactics and the \u2018gateway\u2019 to more extreme content<\/h2>\n

Artificial intelligence and algorithms have been used as a tactic to trick users into believing what they see is real.<\/p>\n

Dr Whittaker said: \u2018Certainly we can see in terms of engagement particularly on short-form video platforms, something like TikTok or YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels, is highly edited clips.<\/p>\n

\u2018Before, things were a bit longer and there was a much bigger distinction between visual content and audio-visual content.<\/p>\n

\u2018Whereas, now, almost all of these platforms have copied TikTok and it\u2019s this constant stream of these short-form videos.<\/p>\n

\u2018If you watch progressively more extreme far-right or misogynistic videos it learns very quickly that that\u2019s what you want to see \u2013 and all of a sudden you\u2019ll be shown more and more.\u2019<\/p>\n

And even with social media platforms aimed at children, it is \u2018still extremely easy to find whichever ideology you\u2019re interested in\u2019, he said.<\/p>\n

Security minister Dan Jarvis said: \u2018We must direct people away from the dangerous path of radicalisation \u2013 whether it be Islamist ideology, Extreme Right-Wing or those seeking mass violence.<\/p>\n
