The President of the\u00a0Oxford<\/a>\u00a0Union has apologised to\u00a0Charlie Kirk\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0family for comments he made that appeared to celebrate death.<\/p>\n

George Abaraonye said in a Union\u00a0WhatsApp<\/a>\u00a0group \u2018Charlie got shot, let\u2019s f***ing go\u2019 shortly after Kirk, a far-right American activist, was killed in September.<\/p>\n

He also sent a message on\u00a0Instagram<\/a>\u00a0that read: \u2018Charlie Kirk got shot loool\u2019.<\/p>\n

The pair had debated at the Oxford Union in May and in a fiery showdown they discussed marriage, abortion, and masculinity.<\/p>\n

Just four months later, Kirk was shot dead while he was on stage speaking at a campus event at Utah Valley University, US.<\/p>\n

The suspect,\u00a0Tyler Robinson<\/a>, 22, is being held at Utah jail.<\/p>\n

Oxford Union was quick to distance the society from Abaraonye\u2019s statements. They said it \u2018unequivocally condemn the reported words and sentiments expressed by the President-Elect\u2019.<\/p>\n

Abaraonye, 20, who was studying philosophy, politics and economics at the Oxbridge institution, was ousted from the Union after receiving a vote of no confidence.<\/p>\n

He told\u00a0The Times<\/a>\u00a0that he had commented on Kirk\u2019s death before he saw footage of the shooting and had \u2018very little context for what [he] was reacting to\u2019.<\/p>\n

He added: \u2018As soon as I saw how serious it was, I went on Instagram to apologise.\u2019<\/p>\n

Addressing Kirk\u2019s family, Abaraonye apologised to Kirk\u2019s two children and widow.<\/p>\n

He said: \u2018I want to offer my apologies and my condolences. No one deserves to lose a husband, no child deserves to grow up without a father. I hope that they are able, in some capacity, to move on from what was a tragic event and to that end, I am very sorry.<\/p>\n

\u2018I reacted without nuance and without having done research. I saw a headline and I reacted. I didn\u2019t take into account the nuance or consider that at all when I made the comments.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Oxford pupil was subject to online abuse after his comments about the Turning Point USA founder made headlines and was condemned by\u00a0Piers Morgan<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Elon Musk<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He was sent racist messages that described him as \u2018subhuman scum\u2019 and that he should be \u2018deported\u2019 and \u2018shot\u2019 that led him to feel \u2018really scared\u2019. This contributed to a mental breakdown.<\/p>\n

He said he felt like he was under heavy scrutiny for a young student who was still learning and developing at university and not immune to making mistakes.<\/p>\n
