Ryanair<\/a>\u00a0has canned its\u00a0subscription scheme<\/a>\u00a0after just eight months because customers were getting too many\u00a0discounted flights<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The airlines Prime subscription service launched back in March, costing members \u00a379 per year, and was hailed as a \u2018game-changer\u2019 for\u00a0air travel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It included benefits such as free reserved\u00a0seats<\/a>, free\u00a0travel insurance<\/a>\u00a0and access to 12 annual member-exclusive seat sales (one booking per month).<\/p>\n

When it first launched, the potential\u00a0savings<\/a>\u00a0forecasted were \u00a3420 per member, if they flew 12 times per year. But it seems it worked a little too well for passengers, with\u00a0Ryanair<\/a>\u00a0making a loss.<\/p>\n

About 55,000 customers signed up to Prime, which generated \u00a33.9 million (\u20ac4.4 million) for the budget airline, but the discounts they received far outweighed this.<\/p>\n

\u2018Our Prime members have received over \u20ac6mn (\u00a35.3 million) in fare discounts, so this trial has cost more money than it generates,\u2019 said\u00a0Ryanair<\/a>\u00a0CMO Dara Brady.<\/p>\n

\u2018This level of memberships, or subscription revenue does not justify the time and effort it takes to launch monthly exclusive Prime seat sales for our 55,000 Prime members.\u2019<\/p>\n

This means the scheme will no longer allow any new members to sign up, although those who have paid for the service will be able to use it until October 2026.<\/p>\n

\u2018We are grateful to our 55,000 Prime members who signed up to this Prime trial over the last eight months, and they can rest assured that they will continue to enjoy exclusive flight and seat savings for the remainder of their 12-month membership,\u2019 the CMO added.<\/p>\n

It\u2019ll be disappointing news for the passengers who praised the scheme initially.<\/p>\n

Metro reader Angela Keating previously said: \u2018For frequent flyers, it\u2019s a good deal.\u2019 While Chris Robinson added: \u2018That\u2019s a game-changer for people who travel a lot. Just think of all the extra holidays you could afford!\u2019<\/p>\n

Other airline discount schemes<\/h2>\n

Wizz Air<\/a>\u00a0has an \u2018all you can fly\u2019 scheme, for \u00a3495 (\u20ac599) for a yearly membership.<\/p>\n

For your cash, you get access to unlimited flights to 200 destinations in over 50 countries, although you still need to pay a flat fee of \u00a38.27 (\u20ac9.99) per booking.<\/p>\n

EasyJet also has a loyalty programme which costs passengers \u00a3249, which gives customers greater flexibility to change flights as well as faster boarding and access to premium seats.<\/p>\n
