Britain has dismissed\u00a0Vladimir Putin<\/a>\u2019s threat for\u00a0a war on Europe<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 after the Russian president failed to negotiate a ceasefire plan that suits him \u2013 as the \u2018same old sabre-rattling\u2019.<\/p>\n

Asked if the country is\u00a0prepared for a Russian attack<\/a>, health secretary, Wes Streeting, admitted that\u00a0the warning is taken \u2018seriously\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But he told Sky News: \u2018I think we should see this for what it is, which is the same old sabre rattling we have heard from president Putin.<\/p>\n

\u2018And the the irony of President Putin talking about warmongering on the part of European leaders would be laughable if what he\u2019s doing in Ukraine weren\u2019t so serious.\u2019<\/p>\n

Streeting said it is fair to say that Labour had \u2018inherited our armed forces in a condition that we would rather not have received\u2019 but that the government is \u2018prioritising investment in defence\u2019.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Sir Keir Starmer said the UK would continue work to \u2018put pressure on in every conceivable way\u2019, including by \u2018doing as much damage to the Russian economy as we can\u2019 through sanctions.<\/p>\n

\u2018We all know that Putin is dragging his feet, not wanting to come to the table, not wanting to reach an agreement,\u2019 he told the Commons.<\/p>\n

\u2018We have to continue to put pressure on in every conceivable way. That is in supporting Ukraine with capability and resource, but also ensuring that our sanctions, acting with allies, do as much damage to the economy in Russia as we can, and pressure that we can put on, will continue to do so, but he\u2019s absolutely right to raise it.\u2019<\/p>\n

This comes after the talks between Putin and US representatives, which include special envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump\u2019s son-in-law Jared Kushner, lasted for more than four hours \u2013 to little avail, it seems.<\/p>\n

Before their meeting had even started, the warlord warned that European powers were making demands on a possible peace settlement for\u00a0Ukraine<\/a>\u00a0that he considers absolutely unacceptable.<\/p>\n

\u2018The question is: if Europe starts a war with us, I believe that very quickly\u2026 this is not Ukraine,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018With Ukraine, we act in a surgical, careful way, you understand, right? It is not war in the full, modern sense of the word. If Europe chooses to start a war, the situation can very quickly reach a point where there will be no one left for us to negotiate with.\u2019<\/p>\n

His comments came before Witkoff and Kushner landed in Moscow.<\/p>\n

Yuri Ushakov, a top Putin official, told reporters following the meeting that the talks were \u2018constructive, very useful and substantive\u2019 but added that a compromise to the lingering territorial issues in Ukraine wasn\u2019t found.<\/p>\n

He said: \u2018The territorial issue, naturally, is the most important for us, and for the Americans too. A compromise option has not yet been found, but some American developments look more or less acceptable, but they need to be discussed.\u2019<\/p>\n
