Drones were spotted in Ireland as\u00a0Volodymyr Zelensky<\/a>\u00a0landed in\u00a0Dublin<\/a>\u00a0for an official visit earlier this week.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian president and his wife Olena flew to Ireland for a one-day trip on Monday night after which he secured \u00a3110 million for the war effort against\u00a0Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Police have now launched an investigation after crew on board the naval vessel L\u00c9 William Butler Yeats detected unidentified drones flying near Howth around the same time.<\/p>\n

Senior Irish\u00a0government<\/a>\u00a0figures were briefed earlier this week about the presence of drones during their trip.<\/p>\n

The Taoiseach (Irish prime minister), Miche\u00e1l Martin, said the incident would be discussed at a National Security Council meeting later this month.<\/p>\n

He said: \u2018It\u2019s been a feature now across Europe in more recent times the emergence of drones in the airspace of other colleagues in the\u00a0European Union<\/a>\u00a0member states and we liaise and\u2026 we share experience.<\/p>\n

\u2018Suffice to say that since the onset of the Ukrainian war there\u2019s been heightened activity on the cyber security front, in terms of maritime issues and in terms of drones.\u2019<\/p>\n

Asked whether he was suggesting Russia was behind the drones, Martin said: \u2018I\u2019m not going to make any comment until we have a full review.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Irish Defence Forces previously said it had no comment on \u2018the specifics of any alleged incidents\u2019.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson said: \u2018Defence Forces support to the security operation, led by An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na [Ireland\u2019s national police] was successfully deployed in multiple means ultimately leading to a safe and successful visit by the President Zelensky to Ireland.\u2019<\/p>\n

Martin said it was an honour to host Zelensky and his wife in Ireland at a joint press conference earlier this week, adding that the country will continue to support\u00a0Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The prime minister added that Zelensky\u2019s trip came at a \u2018critical moment\u2019 for Ukraine and Europe and that it underlined the value of \u2018the friendship between Ukraine and Ireland\u2019.<\/p>\n

He said: \u2018Our is a relationship built on shared values, freedom, democracy, the right of all states to determine their own future \u2013 values the people of Ukraine have sacrificed to defend and protect.\u2019<\/p>\n

Zelensky said Ireland was a \u2018neutral\u2019 but not \u2018indifferent\u2019 country, adding that he was \u2018grateful\u2019 for its support.<\/p>\n

\u2018You are helping us and we appreciate it,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018Ireland\u2019s interests really matter because it is the influence of a large global community.\u2019<\/p>\n

Announcing that the two countries had agreed a new five-year partnership, the Ukrainian president added that \u2018we hope that during this period, Ukraine will become a member of the European Union\u2019.<\/p>\n
