After months of pleading,\u00a0McDonald\u2019<\/a>s customers will be happy to hear that a particular item is being scrapped.<\/p>\n

Back in January 2025, in an attempt to go green and decrease its plastic consumption, the fast food chain made the decision to swap out its plastic lids for hot\u00a0drinks<\/a>\u00a0with a new paper alternative.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the fibre-based lids were an immediate flop with consumers \u2013 criticised for their strange texture and sogginess.<\/p>\n

One\u00a0social media<\/a>\u00a0user, @emmatwinmum even went as far as to say that the new lids had \u2018totally ruined the whole\u00a0coffee<\/a> drinking experience.\u2019<\/p>\n

So, to try and win back their coffee consumer base, McDonald\u2019s have officially reintroduced plastic lids.<\/p>\n

Maybe not a total win for the environment, but definitely a win for fans of a Maccys flat white.<\/p>\n

The fibre-based lids were introduced as part of the chain\u2019s global initiative \u2018Closing the loop on waste.\u2019<\/p>\n

The project, which the chain has pledged should be complete by 2030, aims to reduce the amount of material used across packaging in customer and kitchen areas in the McDonald\u2019s system by 20% versus 2023.<\/p>\n

Other aspects of this plan has involved switching to paper-based cutlery in 2021 and removing the plastic lids from McFlurrys in 2022.<\/p>\n

And while these decisions themselves prompted some minor backlash from customers, the soggy coffee lid saga proved to be the most heated move yet.<\/p>\n

Totally not fit for purpose<\/h2>\n

Almost immediately after the new lids were introduced, customers began flooding\u00a0TikTok<\/a>\u00a0with reviews.<\/p>\n

One of the main criticisms was that due to the material of the lids, people were finding it exceedingly difficult to drink their coffee without the paper dissolving and falling apart.<\/p>\n

User @Alextench called the lids \u2018absolutely disgusting\u2019 and \u2018not fit for purpose.\u2019<\/p>\n

Conducting a full-scale investigation, he went on to note how while the lids seemed solid on first inspection, after just one or two swigs from his coffee, the liquid began seeping into the paper \u2013 totally destroying the structure of the lid and making it near-on impossible to drink without spilling.<\/p>\n

@Phillane1reiterated this mindset, noting how he felt he needed to hold onto the lid when sipping in case it came off.<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s not an easy experience drinking a cup of coffee in McDonald\u2019s anymore,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, a number of customers previously had similar complaints about McDonald\u2019s paper straws.<\/p>\n

Similarly to the fibre-based lids, consumers criticised the paper straws for their tendency to fall apart or crumble.<\/p>\n

On X, user @richardhyland wrote: \u2018I used to love a McDonald\u2019s thick shake, but they are impossible to drink with the paper straws. The straw descends to a pulp before you\u2019re half way through it.\u2019<\/p>\n

He added that as an alternative, him and his partner now take metal straws whenever they visit a McDonald\u2019s branch.<\/p>\n

I physically cannot drink from this<\/h2>\n

Another user on TikTok, @emmatwinmum, shared that one of her main gripes with the lids was how they affected the actual taste of the drink, ultimately impacting the entire coffee drinking experience.<\/p>\n

While this might seem trivial to some, McDonald\u2019s sells approximately\u00a0eight million<\/em>\u00a0cups of coffee globally every day.<\/p>\n

In the UK alone, that\u2019s approximately 440,000 lattes, cappuccinos, and espresso\u2019s keeping Brits caffeinated.<\/p>\n

And it looks like someone on the McDonald\u2019s social team was listening in because plastic lids are officially making a comeback.<\/p>\n

The fast food chain stated: \u2018We will be temporarily returning to plastic lids while we find a suitable alternative that performs to the standards we require.\u2019<\/p>\n

One customer, evidently very pleased about McDonald\u2019s decision, took to TikTok to exclaim: \u2018Please tell me this isn\u2019t a glitch in the system!\u2019 While @Greenyb added: \u2018Oh how we have missed this rare thing of beauty!\u2019<\/p>\n
