Tenerife<\/a>\u00a0has been hit by another tidal surge, with powerful\u00a0waves killing three people<\/a>, just weeks after a series of weather-related incidents in the holiday hotspot.<\/p>\n

Emergency services confirmed a woman and two men had died after being\u00a0swept out into the sea<\/a>\u00a0from a rock pool in Los Gigantes on Sunday afternoon, while several others were also injured.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Canary Islands<\/a>\u00a0issued a\u00a0high wave warning on Wednesday December 3, with forecasts predicting swells of between two and five meters in the northern areas.<\/p>\n

Emilio Navarro, mayor of the municipality of Santiago del Teide, said a pre-alert warning was also in place to inform people about dangerous tidal surges in Tenerife\u2019s most at-risk areas.<\/p>\n

Visitors to the\u00a0Spanish<\/a>\u00a0archipelago have been urged to exercise \u2018extreme caution\u2019 in coastal locations, and to stay away from rocky shorelines or natural pools during adverse weather.<\/p>\n

Additionally, regional government officials told tourists: \u2018Do not risk taking photographs or videos where the waves break.\u2019<\/p>\n

Tidal surges can last from between a few hours to several days, according to the National Oceanography Centre. So if you\u2019re currently in Tenerife, or are due to travel there, here\u2019s everything you need to know to stay safe.<\/p>\n

Tenerife travel advice after weather warnings<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0UK Foreign Office<\/a>\u00a0has not issued travel warnings for Tenerife as a result of the turbulent weather.<\/p>\n

However, the FCDO website notes: \u2018Take care when swimming in the sea. Some beaches, especially around Spanish islands, may have strong undercurrents\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2018If you are walking along unmonitored beaches, be aware that waves can come in further than expected and have strong undertows.\u2019<\/p>\n

British tourists are also advised to follow the \u202fSpanish Meteorological Office (AEMET)<\/a>\u202fand \u202fEuropean Meteorological Services<\/a>\u202ffor severe weather warnings.\u2019<\/p>\n

What to do if you\u2019re in an emergency abroad<\/h2>\n

If you need immediate help while on holiday in Tenerife, the emergency number to call is 112.<\/p>\n

In the event of a crisis, you can also\u00a0contact the Foreign Office<\/a>\u00a0for support and advice.<\/p>\n

Can I get a refund if I cancel my holiday to Tenerife due to the tidal surge?<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019ve taken out your\u00a0travel insurance<\/a>\u00a0and want to cancel your holiday due to the weather, you\u2019re unlikely to be entitled to money back.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth checking either way, but most insurers will only pay out for cancellations if the FCDO advises against anything but essential travel to your destination \u2013 and there are currently no such warnings for Tenerife.<\/p>\n

Some providers also require the local or national authorities to state it\u2019s unsafe to travel there. If your holiday provider or airline is operating in the Canaries as normal and there are no advisories, you won\u2019t get any cancellation cover.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0gocompare.com<\/a>, you should look at the \u2018cancellation and curtailment\u2019 section of your policy, as this can help with cancelling or cutting a trip short due to extreme weather.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s another reason your travel insurance may not cover you, too. If extreme weather was forecast for the area\u00a0before\u00a0<\/em>you booked your holiday and before you took out your insurance policy, you won\u2019t be covered for \u2018anticipated\u2019 events.<\/p>\n

Basically, if you knew the weather was going to be bad but booked anyway, you won\u2019t get your refund.<\/p>\n
