Yesterday, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), organisers of Eurovision, decided that, despite opposition,\u00a0Israel\u00a0<\/a>is in for the\u00a02026 song contest in Vienna.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Within minutes Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands and Slovenia said that, as a result, they were\u00a0boycotting the competition.<\/a><\/p>\n

As a huge fan, I am feeling completely lost. I know that sounds dramatic, but Eurovision isn\u2019t just telly to me.<\/p>\n

A week later, Iceland joined them\u00a0<\/a>\u2013 completing what fans are now calling \u2018The\u00a0Real\u00a0<\/em>Big Five\u2019, a jibe at the traditional \u2018Big Five\u2019 of the\u00a0UK, Spain, France, Italy and Germany, who\u00a0financially\u00a0contribute most to the contest.<\/p>\n

These five withdrawals make it the largest boycott in\u00a0Eurovision\u2019s\u00a0<\/a>70-year history.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, 17 artists in the running to represent Portugal have said they will refuse to perform if they are selected \u2013 even though their broadcaster has not withdrawn.<\/p>\n

I subscribe to its founding values \u2013 peace through culture and European unity \u2013 and\u00a0I take my annual watch parties\u00a0absurdly\u00a0<\/em>seriously.<\/a><\/p>\n

I theme food, spend weeks designing red, white and blue themes, making bunting, blowing budgets on balloons, confetti cannons, and custom LED wristbands.<\/p>\n

But for the first time, I don\u2019t know what to do.<\/p>\n

For almost seventy years, Eurovision has been one of the world\u2019s most successful peace projects, stitching a war\u2011torn continent back together through music and shared values \u2013 built on consistency as much as confetti and its kitsch style.<\/p>\n

That is what makes this moment so heartbreaking. One country\u2019s inclusion now risks ripping that fabric apart at precisely the moment we need it most \u2013 with Europe arguably facing its gravest threat since the Second World War.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no escaping that participation confers legitimacy. You can\u2019t invite a country onto Europe\u2019s biggest soft\u2011power stage and then insist the stage has nothing to do with soft power.<\/p>\n

When\u00a0Russia<\/a>\u00a0invaded Ukraine in 2022, the line that had been crossed was clear, and everyone could see it.\u00a0Russia was immediately banned<\/a>, and rightly so.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, the line was blurry, smudged and malleable \u2013 not just because\u00a0Israel\u00a0<\/a>remains in, but because Eurovision\u2019s organisers wouldn\u2019t even test its members with a vote.<\/p>\n

That isn\u2019t neutrality, nor the consistency it was founded upon.<\/p>\n

Spain\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0RTVE broadcaster slammed the decision as incompatible with its values; its chair warned that \u2018Eurovision is a contest, but human rights are not.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Dutch partner Avrotros said Israel\u2019s participation is not \u2018compatible with the responsibility we bear as a public broadcaster\u2019 while Ireland\u2019s RT\u00c9 called participation \u2018unconscionable\u2019.<\/p>\n

R\u00daV said it had to withdraw \u2018given the public debate in [Iceland]\u2019\u00a0and that \u2018neither\u00a0joy nor peace will prevail with [its] participation\u2019.<\/p>\n

These are not fringe players sulking on the sidelines \u2013 they are mainstream public broadcasters making costly, public choices, and together, they have plunged the contest into its biggest-ever crisis.<\/p>\n

These broadcasters have made it clear that they won\u2019t be neutral, nor will they turn their backs.<\/p>\n

At the same time, other heavyweights back the EBU. The\u00a0BBC<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 whom I have defended my whole life through thick and thin \u2013 supports the decision to keep the contest \u2018inclusive\u2019, while former BBC boss Tim Davie claimed in October that Eurovision was \u2018never about politics\u2019.<\/p>\n

But this is the worst of all worlds.<\/p>\n

Eurovision<\/a>\u00a0is inherently political. Anyone who argues otherwise is just wrong and naive. The show\u2019s founding purpose, its central principle, its core aim, was to unite Europe after bloodshed \u2013 a noble cause, but undeniably a political one.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile,\u00a0Germany<\/a>, hosts\u00a0Austria<\/a>\u00a0and others are supporting the EBU\u2019s decision. And\u00a0that\u00a0<\/em>split is the story. Eurovision\u2019s supposed consensus is now in tatters \u2013 unity in the slogan, fracturing in practice.<\/p>\n

So, I\u2019m stuck between head and heart. In my heart, I feel I should boycott it. I hate the idea of what should be a celebration leaving us all so conflicted and divided.<\/p>\n

But my head keeps looking for a path back \u2013 that broadcasters can find a consistent standard, for a compromise that doesn\u2019t rubber-stamp what United Nations experts consider a genocide, and holds Israel accountable, as they did Russia.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m still holding on to the tiniest hope that something shifts before May and saves the contest \u2013 and, frankly, me.<\/p>\n

Because as it stands, if you can exclude one country over one invasion of a neighbour, then shrug at another, you are not staying out of politics \u2013 you are practising inconsistency, and inconsistency is political.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0EBU have chosen their stance<\/a>, but I don\u2019t pretend this is simple.<\/p>\n

There are artists who will spend their savings chasing a national final slot, crews whose livelihoods depend on a fortnight every May, and fans \u2013 especially queer fans and diaspora communities \u2013 who count on this night to feel seen and safe.<\/p>\n

But I also think about civilians under bombardment who will hear Europe say, with a smile, that this is all just harmless fun.<\/p>\n

If only that was true.<\/p>\n

My Eurovision parties have always been about joy \u2013 bringing together people from across the UK, Ireland, Europe and even\u00a0America<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 but they have never been about denial.<\/p>\n

And the\u00a0BBC in particular certainly seems to be in denial<\/a>. I don\u2019t know how it can defend supporting this outcome, despite polls showing 82% of Britons think Israel shouldn\u2019t be allowed to compete next year, with 69% saying we should withdraw if they do.<\/p>\n

There is at least some hope in those figures. It suggests Britain is the country I\u2019ve always believed it to be. Open, tolerant and with an immovable, stiff moral core, even if that\u2019s not reflected in our state broadcaster.<\/p>\n

Maybe \u2013 just maybe \u2013 there is still a route through. I have a couple of ideas (just in case anyone at the BBC is reading!).<\/p>\n

To their credit, the corporation has, on occasion, added brief explanatory segments around major broadcasts to acknowledge controversies \u2013 as it did around the 2022 World Cup coverage in Qatar.<\/p>\n

The BBC could provide an on-air explanatory statement providing the context and debate over Israel\u2019s participation \u2013 so viewers are, in theory, better informed.<\/p>\n

Or when Eurovision shows the traditional short \u2018postcard\u2019 film before each act, showcasing that artist\u2019s country, culture and tourism, the EBU could air an additional, neutral postcard featuring a\u00a0Palestinian\u00a0<\/a>voice, during a randomised stage of the show.<\/p>\n

Perhaps with changes like these, Europe could get its contest back.<\/p>\n

Until then, I\u2019m holding my breath and trying to remember why this crazy, beautiful show mattered in the first place.<\/p>\n

Because we can\u2019t afford to lose it.<\/p>\n
