Retail expert Mary Portas fought back tears as she revealed how her brother Lawrence came to be the biological father of her son, Horatio.<\/p>\n

In an interview with\u00a0Jamie Laing<\/a>\u00a0on his\u00a0podcast<\/a>, 65-year-old Mary explained how\u00a0her brother served as a sperm donor<\/a>\u00a0while her now ex-wife Melanie Rickey carried the baby.<\/p>\n

At this time, Mary already had two children with ex-husband Graham Portas, who she married in 1990.<\/p>\n

The couple, who share sons Mylo, 31, and Verity, 29, divorced in 2003.<\/p>\n

TV retail guru Mary met fashion journalist Melanie that same year, which is when, she says, she realised that she was a lesbian.<\/p>\n

On the decision to ask her brother to serve as their sperm donor, Mary said that she was \u2018very clear that I wanted to have a bloodline.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018If I was going to have another child, I wanted to make sure that it was related in some way and biologically related to my other kids,\u2019 Mary said on Jamie\u2019s\u00a0Great Company<\/a>\u00a0podcast.<\/p>\n

Because she knew that he didn\u2019t want to have children himself, brother Lawrence seemed like the natural choice.<\/p>\n

\u2018And Lawrence turned up to the old donor place and said, \u201cDone it, sis!\u201d\u2018 Mary revealed.<\/p>\n

Melanie then underwent IVF treatment and carried Horatio, who was born in 2012.<\/p>\n

\u2018The most beautiful time is when, you know, he came into the world and I rang Lawrence and Lawrence turned up and picked him up,\u2019 Mary revealed.<\/p>\n

\u2018And it was like, it was his gift to me. God, I get emotional. It was his gift. And it was the greatest gift.\u2019<\/p>\n

When asked what made Horatio \u2018the greatest gift,\u2019 the Mary Queen of Shops star replied: \u2018Oh my God, you know, like because of the years that we helped each other.<\/p>\n

\u2018I was always his big sis, and then he was able to give me this gift.\u2019<\/p>\n

After meeting Melanie in 2003, the pair entered into a civil partnership in 2010, before marrying in 2014.<\/p>\n

Of discovering her true sexuality, Mary told\u00a0The Guardian<\/a>: \u2018It wasn\u2019t a case of, \u201cOoh, I\u2019ve been thinking about Linda Evangelista.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018So in one way, it was just about Melanie. But there was a sexual attraction.<\/p>\n

\u2018I do love women. What surprised me afterwards was that so many women are fluid in this way. I would meet them and they would say: \u201cI was married, now I\u2019m with a woman\u201d.\u2019<\/p>\n

The couple divorced in 2019, following a period of \u2018conscious uncoupling\u2019, amid Melanie\u2019s battle with alcoholism.<\/p>\n

A statement released to\u00a0The Sun<\/a>\u00a0at the time read: \u2018After 17 years together we have decided to separate. There is no one else involved.<\/p>\n

\u2018We have spent the last year consciously managing our separation in as good-heartedly, open, and mature a way as possible to ensure a smooth, amicable evolution for us.<\/p>\n
