Comedian Robin Ince has resigned from his long-running\u00a0BBC<\/a>\u00a0radio show, claiming his views were \u2018in conflict\u2019 with the broadcaster.<\/p>\n

The 56-year-old media personality has presented Radio 4\u2019s science show, The Infinite Monkey Cage, alongside Professor Brian Cox since 2009.<\/p>\n

Now, in a statement on\u00a0social media<\/a>, Ince has announced the \u2018saddest day of [his] professional life\u2019 as he confirms he is stepping back from the popular series, described as \u2018witty and irreverent\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018I never thought I would have to leave the show.<\/p>\n

\u2018I always imagined going on until I dropped dead under the studio lights due to a brain aneurysm caused by my final attempt to understand notions of quantum gravity or the shock of being told about fly maggot infestations in the sacks of macaque monkeys,\u2019 he began.<\/p>\n

He revealed that he resigned in September after 16 years on the show he helped name and develop.<\/p>\n

Ince claimed his \u2018opinions outside the BBC have been considered problematic for some time\u2019, citing his support for the trans community, his criticisms of\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0and other \u2018outlandish opinions\u2019 such as once \u2018gently criticising Stephen Fry\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018These things were considered to conflict with being a freelance BBC science presenter,\u2019 he alleged.<\/p>\n

He also alleged in a recent meeting, BBC studio execs \u2018again voiced problems\u2019 and he felt left with a choice to either remain \u2018obedient and quieter\u2019 or resign to \u2018have the freedom to speak out against what I believe are injustices.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018I chose the latter. I broke my heart,\u2019 he shared.<\/p>\n

His love for the show and audience made it a \u2018difficult decision to make\u2019 but decided in the face of \u2018extremist voices promoting hate and division\u2019 he couldn\u2019t \u2018pamper [himself] with the luxury of silence\u2019.<\/p>\n

He went on to reference his \u2018heroes\u2019 Sinead O\u2019Connor, James Baldwin and Audre Lorde, and his father who raised him to be believe in \u2018fairness, justice and kindness\u2019.<\/p>\n

He then apologised to his listeners for his departure and reaffirmed his hopes that his departure could make him a \u2018better ally\u2019.<\/p>\n

Metro<\/strong>\u00a0understands the BBC rejects Ince\u2019s version of events.<\/p>\n

In a statement, a BBC spokesperson said: \u2018We would like to thank Robin Ince for everything he\u2019s done for Infinite Monkey Cage over the past 16 years and wish him all the best for the future.\u00a0 We will announce more Monkey Cage news in due course.\u2019<\/p>\n

In a separate Instagram video ahead of his resignation announcement, he said there is \u2018no clear way through\u2019 to being the \u2018right ally\u2019 and no matter what you do, some people \u2018will despise you\u2019.<\/p>\n

He then doubled down on his stance of \u2019empathy\u2019 over \u2018easy cruelty\u2019.<\/p>\n

Friends and fans have rallied around Ince after his resignation, praising him for his decision.<\/p>\n

\u2018Can\u2019t imagine how hard it must be to walk away but leading with love makes you truly one of the good guys,\u2019 Sophie Ellis Bextor wrote in the comments.<\/p>\n

Comedian Jen Brister added: \u2018Robin this will hurt but you can walk towards your next adventure with your head held high.\u2019<\/p>\n

Author Heidi Mavir shared: \u2018You are a wonderful comic, an amazing writer and a wonderful ally. This is a loss to broadcasting and I am so grateful to you for making this choice. Thank you for leading by example, Robin. You are an absolute legend.\u2019<\/p>\n

Outside his BBC show, Ince has been a regular advocate for various causes over the years, including supporting libraries and speaking up for trans rights.<\/p>\n

He has also attended numerous Just Stop Oil events. In a Substack post earlier this year,\u00a0he wrote<\/a>: \u2018I have great admiration for the courage of the Just Stop Oil protesters who, for being caught planning peaceful protest, have been given sentences longer than those given to people who have violently attacked their partners\u2019<\/p>\n
