They say never kiss a Tory<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 but I truly never thought I\u2019d\u00a0miss\u00a0<\/em>a Tory.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

But here we are.<\/p>\n

Conservative<\/a>\u00a0influencer\u00a0Emily Hewertson<\/a>\u00a0is back on\u00a0Big Brother<\/a>, and I\u2019m surprisingly pleased.<\/p>\n

On Friday night, three weeks after being evicted from Big Brother, Emily returned to the house alongside Farida Khalifa \u2013 and, while I certainly don\u2019t like her, I firmly believe it\u2019s the best thing that could have happened to the Big Brother house.<\/p>\n

They say never kiss a Tory<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 but I truly never thought I\u2019d\u00a0miss\u00a0<\/em>a Tory.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

But here we are.<\/p>\n

Conservative<\/a>\u00a0influencer\u00a0Emily Hewertson<\/a>\u00a0is back on\u00a0Big Brother<\/a>, and I\u2019m surprisingly pleased.<\/p>\n

On Friday night, three weeks after being evicted from Big Brother, Emily returned to the house alongside Farida Khalifa \u2013 and, while I certainly don\u2019t like her, I firmly believe it\u2019s the best thing that could have happened to the Big Brother house.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m the first to protest when reality television threatens to influence politics. I firmly believe Nigel Farage wouldn\u2019t have won his seat in Clacton had he not been on I\u2019m A Celebrity\u2026 Get Me Out of Here!, and I\u2019ll never understand why MAGA-loving\u00a0Thomas Skinner<\/a>\u00a0was invited onto\u00a0Strictly Come Dancing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Big Brother, though, is an entirely different kettle of fish. It is \u2013 and always has been \u2013 the ultimate social experiment, one that should reflect the society its housemates are sealed away from.<\/p>\n

Right now, according to YouGov, the right is growing in popularity. Meanwhile, the Big Brother house has felt like an echo chamber of lefties like me \u2013 with the exception of Farage\u2019s pal\u00a0Caroline Monk<\/a>\u00a0and the disgraced George Gilbert.<\/p>\n

Gilbert was removed from the house<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and rightly so \u2013 due to his offensive language; which included effectively questioning whether there was any justification for\u00a0antisemitism<\/a>\u00a0(\u2018Is it a case of no smoke without fire, I wonder?\u2019).<\/p>\n

Gilbert should never have been anywhere near Big Brother \u2013 not because his views didn\u2019t align with mine, but because they were baseless, dangerous, and ultimately breached Ofcom regulations about what can be shown on television.<\/p>\n

But there has to be a bridge between the right-wing politics Gilbert represented \u2013 and the more left-wing voices in the house.<\/p>\n

For now, I think Emily could be that bridge. I imagine \u2013 or hope \u2013 she might be a tad more reasonable in her communication than Gilbert, while remaining just as forthright.<\/p>\n

I can say with some confidence\u2026 I\u2019ll find Emily insufferable. On first impression alone, she\u2019s childish, loud, and obnoxious \u2013 and that\u2019s before we even get to her politics.<\/p>\n

But for the first time on Big Brother, I\u2019m finding myself increasingly frustrated with my echo chamber \u2013 the housemates I align with to a tee.<\/p>\n

Zelah Glasson<\/a>, Feyisola Akintoye, and Teja Dalphy speak my language. Almost everything they say feels spot on to me. If I were in the house, I know I\u2019d get sucked into setting the world to rights every single day \u2013 and that would be a problem.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s an ego that comes with being on the left of politics. We believe our moral compass always points in the right direction, and that anyone who doesn\u2019t share our \u2018woke\u2019 vision is wrong, terrible, and doesn\u2019t have a voice worth listening to.<\/p>\n

On Big Brother, that tunnel vision is starting to grate on me \u2013 even if, in life, I\u2019m exactly the same.<\/p>\n

Caroline has said things that make my skin crawl, like describing Farage as \u2018quite a good bloke\u2019 \u2013\u00a0but too often she is dismissed by the other housemates.<\/p>\n

Teja, Zelah, and Feyisola won\u2019t even let her help marshall the shopping list. The mere suggestion of it sent them into a tailspin, and their desperation to retain power was so transparent, it became undeniable<\/p>\n

Their behaviour has become unhelpful. Big Brother is an experience where housemates should be wildly different from each other \u2013 and learn from those differences.<\/p>\n

Right now, I don\u2019t see much growth from anyone on either side of the political spectrum.<\/p>\n

To be clear, I\u2019m more likely to marry Ryan Reynolds than become friends with someone like Emily Hewertson. But I don\u2019t have to like her to appreciate that she is very needed in the house.<\/p>\n

I want to see housemates I wouldn\u2019t meet \u2013 or want to meet \u2013 in the outside world, and listen to them from a distance. I might not agree with them, but I\u2019m intrigued to hear their perspectives and see those views held to account.<\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t have to mean endorsing offensive beliefs or language. But it does mean celebrating variety in all forms \u2013 including political.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure I\u2019ll loathe much of what Emily says, and I certainly don\u2019t know if she\u2019ll make it to the final.<\/p>\n

But if, even for just a few weeks, someone can shift the balance in the house, this will be a much more interesting Big Brother.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
