Setting my alarm for 4am, I thought \u2018why am I doing this?\u2019<\/p>\n

Half an hour after the familiar anxiety-inducing trill rang through the bedroom, bleary-eyed and in desperate need of caffeine, our\u00a0Uber<\/a>\u00a0arrived,\u00a0and I still hadn\u2019t answered that question.<\/p>\n

My five-year-old son, however, was much clearer on the purpose of the incredibly early-morning journey we were embarking on.<\/p>\n

sleep not fully eradicated by brushing my teeth, it wasn\u2019t difficult to spot the other\u00a0dads<\/a>\u00a0on the same pilgrimage.<\/p>\n

Armed with Canterbury Travel\u2019s maroon backpacks, their children had gleeful, twinkling looks on their faces. All these positive emotions are only going to lead to one thing, I thought: a domino-effect tantrum-filled return flight.<\/p>\n

Watching my pre-teen shriek with laughter as she drifted a snowmobile around a frozen track was worth the 4am alarm.<\/p>\n

Like many\u00a0parents who dread mealtimes away from home, we always arm\u00a0ourselves with a bag full of surefire snacks (one day we\u2019ll pluck up the courage to remove this safety blanket, I\u2019m sure).<\/p>\n

Although options are limited, they clearly know their clientele well: Pasta Bolognese (optional potatoes) and crepes.\u00a0Simple, hot, and included in the price.<\/p>\n

By now we\u2019ve been on the go for 14 hours and, aside from an over-aggressive snowball fight from our\u00a011-year-old\u00a0against her younger brother, we\u2019ve still managed to avoid all tantrums.<\/p>\n

The screaming tube of terror I\u2019d imagined for the flight home never materialised.<\/p>\n

Thanks to everyone under the age of 10 collectively falling asleep the second we took\u00a0off,\u00a0I\u00a0even managed to drink\u00a0a glass of wine\u00a0in contented silence.<\/p>\n

We unlocked our front door shortly after midnight. Filled with magic, no major tantrums and a million happy memories, it felt like we\u2019d experienced our own Christmas miracle.<\/p>\n
