An alleged diamond thief\u00a0is\u00a0due to be\u00a0extradited from the UK to\u00a0Belgium<\/a>\u00a0after being arrested following\u00a0a\u00a0global\u00a0Interpol\u00a0appeal.<\/p>\n Hugo Javier Marin Salgado is wanted for \u2018organised\u00a0or armed robbery\u2019\u00a0and features among the\u00a0crime-fighting\u00a0organisation\u2019s\u00a0Red\u00a0Notices. \u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n The Venezuelan man\u00a0is named in an\u00a0appeal which asks anyone to contact their local or national police if they have any information.<\/p>\n The case involves diamonds being stolen from a shop in Antwerp, according to the city\u2019s Public Prosecutions Office.<\/p>\n Salgado, 68,\u00a0was\u00a0sentenced in absentia\u00a0to\u00a037 months\u00a0in prison on February 23,\u00a02017\u00a0by the Antwerp Criminal Court and his arrest was immediately ordered, the office said.<\/p>\n He was arrested in the UK on January 16 this year by officers from the National Crime Agency.<\/p>\n Salgado was apprehended under a Part 1 warrant,\u00a0which enables the authorities to process extradition requests from \u2018Category 1\u2019 territories, including the Netherlands.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In June, he appeared via a live link from HMP Thamesmead in south-east\u00a0London<\/a>\u00a0for an extradition hearing at Westminster Magistrates\u2019 Court.<\/p>\n Salgado is already serving a custodial sentence in the UK and has consented to being extradited to\u00a0Belgium\u00a0in custody, according to court\u00a0records.\u00a0Four days later, magistrates ordered that the extradition does not take place until after he completes his domestic tariff.<\/p>\n The court invoked Section 36C of the Extradition Act 2023, which can be used when a defendant is from a Part 1 country and a serving prisoner.<\/p>\n Launched in the late 1940s, the list forms part of work to help countries share information and look for international fugitives.<\/p>\n The first major international public appeal led to the 2007 capture of sex offender\u00a0Christopher Paul Neill,\u00a0<\/a>a Canadian national who had been teaching in schools across Asia.
