But the protesters, some beating drums, demanded better protections for forests, with some carrying signs saying \u2018Our land is not for sale\u2019, and chanting \u2018They cannot decide for us without us\u2019.<\/p>\n
Video showed one leader, known only by the name Nato, saying: \u2018We can\u2019t eat money. We want our lands free from agribusiness, oil exploration, illegal miners and illegal loggers.\u2019<\/p>\n
He described the protest as \u2018a moment of revolt, of indignation\u2019, saying \u2018We indigenous people feel the defeat of our territory in our skins.\u2019<\/p>\n

Staff used tables and chairs to barricade the entrance to the \u2018blue zone\u2019 at the centre of the venue, while a police officer was filmed being pushed away swiftly in a wheelchair.<\/p>\n
Joao Santiago, a professor at the Federal University of Para, said: \u2018The Indigenous movement wanted to present its demands inside the blue zone but were not allowed in.\u2019<\/p>\n
Hundreds had marched to the conference, but calm was restored soon after the clashes, as the protesters dispersed.<\/p>\n
Although there have been efforts to include indigenous groups in the summit, with dozens arriving by boat to attend discussions, many feel this is not enough \u2013 particularly when thousands of acres of rainforest were cut down just to\u00a0build a road for the summit.<\/a><\/p>\n A spokesperson for United Nations\u00a0Climate Change<\/a>\u00a0told AFP that there were \u2018minor injuries to two security staff, and minor damage to the venue\u2019.<\/p>\n They added: \u2018Brazilian and UN security personnel took protective actions to secure the venue, following all established security protocols.<\/p>\n \u2018Brazilian and UN authorities are investigating the incident. The venue is fully secured, and COP negotiations continue.\u2019<\/p>\n Under current policies in place, the world is facing long-term global warming of 2.8C, according to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), far above the 1.5C set out in the Paris Accord ten years ago.<\/p>\n Visiting Belem ahead of the summit,\u00a0Keir Starmer<\/a>\u00a0admitted that \u2018consensus is gone\u2019 in the UK as well as globally, despite \u2018unequivocal\u2019\u00a0science<\/a>.<\/p>\n The UK is still \u2018doubling down on the fight against climate change\u2019, Sir Keir said, as he defended clean energy policies.<\/p>\n However, this was somewhat undermined by his decision not to invest in a Brazilian-led rainforest fund, which the UK had played a key role in establishing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The climate conference, which officially began on Monday, is looking at how the world can mitigate global heating, as well as improve wider environmental protections.
