US<\/a>\u00a0forces are pursuing an oil tanker in international waters near\u00a0Venezuela<\/a>\u00a0as part of an operation to seize it.<\/p>\n

Bella 1 \u2013 one of dozens of \u2018ghost ships\u2019 under US sanctions for taking part in\u00a0Iran<\/a>\u2019s oil trade \u2013 reportedly refused to be boarded and is trying to continue its journey.<\/p>\n

Sanctions are also\u00a0in place targeting Venezuela\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0state-run oil company, affecting around 30 ships in Venezuelan waters or approaching the country.<\/p>\n

Trump last week ordered a \u2018total and complete blockade\u2019 of these ships, and seized one earlier this month.<\/p>\n

A second tanker was intercepted<\/a>\u00a0near Venezuelan waters on Saturday, called Centuries.<\/p>\n

It is not on the sanctions list but was operating under a false flag and allegedly carrying sanctioned Venezuelan oil.<\/p>\n

Later on Saturday, US forces approached Bella 1 but its crew did not stop for a boarding manoeuvre and kept sailing, according to US officials who spoke to the\u00a0New York<\/a>\u00a0Times and CNN anonymously.<\/p>\n

The US Coast Guard continued to pursue the tanker on Sunday and into the early hours of Monday morning.<\/p>\n

\u2018The United States Coast Guard is in active pursuit of a sanctioned \u201cdark fleet\u201d vessel that is part of Venezuela\u2019s illegal sanctions evasion,\u2019 a US official said.<\/p>\n

\u2018It is flying a false flag and under a judicial seizure order.\u2019US officials did not disclose the ship\u2019s name or current location when asked.<\/p>\n

It was identified in reports by a British maritime risk management firm called Vanguard and a US maritime security source.<\/p>\n

    Bella 1, which was added to the sanctions list last year, was empty when it was approaching Venezuela.<\/p>\n
