A specialist\u00a0Russian<\/a>\u00a0submarine unit which targets vital undersea infrastructure may be heading to British waters, the head of the Navy has warned.<\/p>\n

The Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research \u2013 known by the Russian acronym GUGI \u2013 is one of the most secretive elements of\u00a0Vladimir Putin<\/a>\u2019s military.<\/p>\n

GUGI vessels are sent to sweep the seabed undetected, tracking down any possible points of vulnerability for countries like the UK which rely heavily on cables and pipes that connect to the continent.<\/p>\n

In a speech earlier this month, First Sea Lord General Sir Gwyn Jenkins said spy ships like\u00a0the Yantar<\/a>\u00a0are \u2018only the visible bit you see in public and it\u2019s not the bit that worries me most\u2019.<\/p>\n

In an interview with the\u00a0Financial Times<\/a>\u00a0today, Jenkins said Moscow recently had \u2018issues\u2019 with the GUGI programme.<\/p>\n

But he added: \u2018It appears that they have reset that programme. So we\u2019re expecting them to deploy again.\u2019<\/p>\n

The return of the undersea operation would give Putin the \u2018option for physical action\u2019, he said.<\/p>\n

On December 4, Defence Secretary\u00a0John Healey<\/a>\u00a0unveiled a new multi-million pound high-tech force targeting the Russian subs that threaten undersea infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Atlantic Bastion<\/a>\u00a0will involve Royal Navy warships and aircraft working alongside autonomous vehicles and AI technology to stop enemies from damaging telecommunications cables and oil pipelines.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0government<\/a>\u00a0has said Russian activity off the British coast has increased by 30% over the past two years, with the Yantar ship seen twice in 2025.<\/p>\n

In his FT interview, Jenkins warned the UK does \u2018effectively\u2019 have a border with Russia, which is the \u2018open seas to our north\u2019.<\/p>\n

He added that any supposed reassurance that \u2018somehow we have eastern Europe between us and that threat is a misplaced complacency\u2019, and the comfort taken from being an island is \u2018a false comfort\u2019.<\/p>\n

Last month, a report from\u00a0Parliament<\/a>\u2019s Defence Committee said the UK \u2018lacks a plan for defending the homeland and overseas territory\u2019.<\/p>\n

The committee, chaired by\u00a0Labour<\/a>\u00a0MP Tan Dhesi, blasted the government\u2019s lack of movement on defence matters.<\/p>\n

A \u2018national conversation\u2019 on security mooted by the Strategic Defence Review has not yet begun, the report says, while a proposed Defence Readiness Bill is yet to be written.<\/p>\n
