On\u00a0Reddit<\/a>\u2019s r\/AskUK page, user h00dman\u00a0posted<\/a>: \u2018Are\u00a0Terry\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Chocolate Oranges easier to break into segments these days, or have I finally become \u2018ard as nails?\u2019<\/p>\n

Responses flooded in from others who\u2019d noticed the same thing, with this shared experience leaving them convinced it was the former.<\/p>\n

\u2018Used to have to slam it repeatedly into the corner of a table to get anywhere and now I can do it unassisted,\u2019 wrote Bitter-Crazy4119, while Sm0keytrip0d joked it had been \u2018downgraded to a Terry\u2019s Chocolate Easy Peeler.\u2019<\/p>\n

Some blamed it on a manufacturing change, including Judge_Dredd who claimed the pieces were previously solid but now feature a raised outer edge, \u2018meaning a certain proportion of your orange is now just air, and also making them easier to separate.\u2019<\/p>\n

And they aren\u2019t the only ones\u00a0pushing this theory<\/a>; it\u2019s been cropping up every so often for the last few years on\u00a0social media<\/a>, with many surmising the treat was modified after the brand\u2019s acquisition by French firm Carambar & Co in 2017, when production was moved to\u00a0Strasbourg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Given the various confectionery conspiracies that have turned out to be true recently \u2013 such as Nestl\u00e9\u2019s Toffee Crisp and Blue Riband\u00a0failing to meet the standard to be called \u2018chocolate\u2019<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Metro\u00a0<\/strong>did some digging to try crack the case wide open.<\/p>\n

Have Terry\u2019s Chocolate Oranges changed?<\/h2>\n

Terry\u2019s refused to confirm or deny the structure and recipe of the ball had changed in any way that could impact your opening experience.<\/p>\n

However, news reports from the last decade suggest the moulded shape of each Chocolate Orange segment may have been altered to leave an air gap between them, allowing the product to keep to the same dimensions despite getting smaller in weight.<\/p>\n

Carambar said the move was necessary as a result of \u2018sky-high cocoa prices due to massive cocoa shortages\u2019, but Grocery analyst Richard Price, from Britsuperstore,\u00a0told the Daily Mail<\/a>\u00a0called yet another case of \u2018shrinkflation\u2019.<\/p>\n

Archive images bolster this hypothesis; Terry\u2019s wedges look largely solid in pre-2016 photos, after which a new ripple effect design reveals a noticeablelevel of \u2018hollowing\u2019.<\/p>\n

With undeniable evidence the\u00a0Chocolate Orange<\/a>\u00a0Ball has quietly been weakened (Terry\u2019s-gate, if you will), if you\u2019re finding it easier to break into your festive chocolate, it\u2019s probably not because you\u2019ve suddenly become hench without realising.<\/p>\n

However, while Carambar remains tight-lipped about manufacturing, it does note that higher storage temperatures (warmer is better) and technique (it\u2019s best to bash them off a hard surface) play a major part too.<\/p>\n

\u2018Cracking a\u00a0Terry\u2019s Chocolate Orange has always been part science, part ceremony,\u2019 Mimi Williams, spokesperson at\u00a0Terry\u2019s Chocolate tells\u00a0Metro<\/strong>. \u2018Success depends on the right conditions: the correct tap, a confident unwrap and the perfect chocolate temperature.\u2019<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not the only Chocolate Orange controversy to hit the headlines recently either.<\/p>\n

Terry\u2019s had to leap into action last week after a UK-based American influencer\u2019s viral\u00a0TikTok<\/a>\u00a0sparked nationwide outrage and almost caused \u2018an international incident\u2019.<\/p>\n

The video in question, which has now surpassed 2.2m views, showed Russell Valentin (aka @redbusruss) taste-testing the product, biting into it like an apple, rather than following the traditional segment-by-segment method.<\/p>\n
