But it\u2019s not always been celebrated in its current form.<\/p>\n<p>So, who invented Christmas as we know it? Let\u2019s take a look back through history\u2026<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article-image wp-image-15732287\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GettyImages-85406624.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=507\" alt=\"Children decorating Christmas tree\" width=\"507\" height=\"338\" \/><\/div><figcaption>Christmas hasn\u2019t always been about decorations and presents (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who \u2018invented\u2019 Christmas?<\/h2>\n<p>Okay, so Christmas as we know it didn\u2019t come into being the second Jesus was born.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not actually clear that he was even born on December 25.<\/p>\n<p>The first recorded incidence of Christmas being celebrated dates back to the Roman Empire in 336 AD, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine.<\/p>\n<p>So technically, the Romans invented it \u2013 although there\u2019s no specific person credited with having done so.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"dcb44312-3153-4826-8d66-fde3f6b4f19a\" title=\"Evolution of Christmas | History\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0Wwu6yqmr98?feature=oembed\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>There are many theories as to why December 25 would have been chosen, including one surmising it\u2019s because it coincided with the winter solstice.<\/p>\n<p>Others suggest it\u2019s linked to the ancient Roman pagan midwinter festivals Saturnalia (which honoured the Roman god Saturn) and Dies Natalis Solis Invicti (the festival marking the solstice).<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, some believe it might have been chosen as it\u2019s exactly nine months after March 25 \u2013 which was originally selected as the date of the spring equinox.<\/p>\n<p>This date is also cited as the day of God\u2019s creation of Adam, and thereforea fitting choice for celebrating Christ\u2019s conception.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22247178\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/GettyImages-1437377497.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=509\" alt=\"Cheerful African American mother and daughter having fun on Christmas day at home.\" width=\"509\" height=\"339\" \/><\/div><figcaption>Families come together for lots of different reasons at Christmas (Picture: Getty Images\/iStockphoto)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite the Romans having marked the date, Christmas was a relatively minor affair, and was not celebrated with a specific liturgy until the 9th century.<\/p>\n<p>This period of festive partying tended to be riotous though, with binge-drinking, gluttony and other hedonism involved \u2013 as you might expect from the ancient Romans.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrants would often go from door to door threatening vandalism if they were not given food and drink, reminiscent of the \u2018bring us some figgy pudding\/we won\u2019t go until we\u2019ve got some\u2019 carol lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly though, the legend of Santa Claus doesn\u2019t connect to the Romans \u2013 as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/12\/22\/seven-christmas-traditions-explained-eating-turkey-pulling-crackers-22230131\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article - Inline Links\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/12\/22\/seven-christmas-traditions-explained-eating-turkey-pulling-crackers-22230131\/\">Saint Nicholas originates from what is now Turkey<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 while modern-day Santa has connections to the Dutch.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How was Charles Dickens involved?<\/h2>\n<p>Charles Dickens is given some credit for giving us Christmas in its more modern form,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2019\/12\/04\/wrote-christmas-carol-book-year-come-11268432\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article -
