My life changed forever the night my mother was thrown out of the house.<\/p>\n

It was\u00a0Christmas<\/a>\u00a0Day 2003 but instead of excitement and joy, the air\u202fhad been\u202fthick with tension.<\/p>\n

As usual, there\u2019d been no spontaneity, no ripping of wrapping paper. Rather, my brother and I\u202fhad\u202fopened our presents like\u00a0robots<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dad\u202falways\u202fmarked each present with a number,\u202fwhich meant each gift was to be\u202fopened\u202fin\u202fa specific order\u202faccording to a\u202fcorresponding piece of paper he held\u202fand, even then, it was only allowed with\u202fhis nod of approval.<\/p>\n

Every day was like this. We lived according to\u202fhis<\/em>\u202frules\u202fand his rules only.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Every dinnertime,\u202fwe all\u202fsat\u202fin assigned places that he set, and though\u202fwe all tried our best to obey these rules\u202ffor the sake of a quiet day, at Christmas it was especially hard.<\/p>\n

Dad demanded so much more from everyone<\/a>,\u202fbut Mum usually took the brunt of it.\u202fAnd so, without fail\u202fon Christmas Eve we would hear them shouting at each other.<\/p>\n

On Christmas\u202fDay, while Dad controlled our movements, Mum sat very still, muted and switched off knowing the best way to survive the day was to say as little as possible.<\/p>\n

But,\u202fan argument ignited over something minor.<\/p>\n

Dad wanted to go to the pub and have a break from my brother and I, but Mum was too tired to go with him\u202fso went\u202fupstairs for a lie-down.\u202fThat was a mistake.<\/p>\n

I soon heard a crash as Dad dragged her from their bed and across the landing.<\/p>\n

Violence was nothing new in our home<\/a>, but its familiarity didn\u2019t make it any easier on me. I was only 11 years old \u2013\u202fthe sounds from upstairs were enough to\u202fimmobilise me\u202fcompletely. I just stood there,\u202fmy body frozen to the spot\u202fbut\u202fmy mind racing in panic for Mum.<\/p>\n

My brother, meanwhile \u2013 who\u202fis two years older than me and like Dad\u202fhe showed off, bullied people, and could be violent\u202ftoo\u202f\u2013\u202fseemed poised to jump to\u202fDad\u2019s\u202faid.<\/p>\n

The\u202fconflict,\u202fnow\u202fdownstairs,\u202fsaw\u202fMum backed into the corner\u202fwith\u202fDad holding\u202fone\u202farm,\u202fand\u202fmy brother holding the other.\u202fThey were physically preventing her from defending herself.<\/p>\n

Both of them had hold of her, pulling her and\u202fyet\u202fI still\u202fcouldn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n

Instinctively,\u202fI reached for the phone and sat on the stairs. I knew that what they were doing was wrong, but I also knew that if I called the police, I would be betraying the ultimate unwritten law of the house: Stay silent, and don\u2019t rock the boat \u2013 ever.<\/p>\n

And then\u202fI caught what a glimpse of my mother, as she flew past me, her tiny frame\u202fracing\u202fthrough the front door into the cold Christmas night.<\/p>\n

Though there was already a\u202fsystem of rules and punishments\u202fin place, immediately after Mum\u2019s departure,\u202fDad\u202fintroduced even stricter rules.<\/p>\n

House phones were taken from the charging cradles and doors that were open \u2013 like the kitchen door that joined from the hallway to the living room \u2013 were shut.\u202fAnd\u202fif the living room doors were closed, you couldn\u2019t go in.<\/p>\n

My brother and I were\u202fthen\u202fconfined to our bedrooms outside of mealtimes\u202fmeaning\u202fmy world grew smaller overnight.<\/p>\n

The house lost its colour,\u202fliterally: Mum had chosen the previous brighter colours of yellow in the kitchen and pink in the living room\u202fbut now Dad had everything painted over in beiges and creams.<\/p>\n

The place felt bare and cold and like no happiness or joy existed there \u2013 which, certainly in my case, felt true. I became\u202fintroverted and depressed.<\/p>\n

By\u00a0New Year<\/a>\u2019s\u202fthat same year, the woman who would become\u202fmy new stepmother\u202fmoved in.<\/p>\n

Seeing her silver Mercedes glistening in the driveway \u2013\u202fthat I later learned Dad had bought for her \u2013 I suddenly understood the new furniture in the house and the need to redecorate.\u202fIt was all for her, to make it seem that we could be this shiny new, happy family.<\/p>\n

Of course, we were anything but.<\/p>\n

Within a matter of months my brother left out of jealousy of the attention my father gave her and moved in with my grandmother.\u202fAnd as much as I wanted to escape too,\u202fthat wasn\u2019t an option for me.<\/p>\n

Nanny\u202fhad always disliked me for being \u2018too feminine\u2019, and she wasn\u2019t\u00a0accepting of me being autistic<\/a>. Her favourite thing to say was \u2018that Aspergers don\u2019t wash with me.\u2019<\/p>\n

I was quickly moved from my bedroom to the furthest end of the house so my stepmother could have my room to store her clothes and have a makeup table. I felt like I was being locked away, erased.<\/p>\n

I had been grappling with my identity throughout this, and I finally came to terms with the fact that I was trans. But I couldn\u2019t exist as myself in the house \u2013 there was already so much conflict.<\/p>\n

At night I could hear her and him arguing \u2013 in one particularly bad argument, she threw a kettle of boiling water over him. But as always, she would stay, and they would argue again the next day.<\/p>\n

I noticed that Dad was not buying food and I was getting uncomfortably hungry \u2013 especially when he would go on holiday with my stepmother, leaving me alone at home.<\/p>\n

Eventually I confessed what was happening to a school teacher and they began boarding me at school with the fees charged to the state. It was hard, being an all boys school, since I hadn\u2019t come out as trans, but I grew to appreciate the stability and predictability.<\/p>\n

Now at 33,\u202fI live alone, I pay my mortgage and have my own space. And I\u2019m finally able to pursue\u00a0gender reassignment without fear<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I can choose my own clothes and eat what I want when I want without fear of retaliation. Through the years I witnessed Dad-like behaviour in landlords, bosses and even romantic partners and I would have to make a quick exit. I knew where it could lead and was not going to tolerate it.<\/p>\n

Despite repeated attempts to get in touch with my mum, I have never been able to re-establish proper contact\u202fwith her.\u202fIn fact, I\u2019ve\u202fnever reconnected with\u202feither of\u202fmy parents<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That Christmas night\u202fwent a long way into shaping me as a person,\u202fand if I learned anything, it\u2019s\u202fthat the only person you can rely on is yourself and that is what I have always had to do and will continue to do because most people are unreliable, and some are even dangerous.<\/p>\n
