Whether it\u2019s too hot, too cold, or too wet, Brits absolutely love to complain about the\u00a0weather<\/a>. We\u2019re extremely talented at it.<\/p>\n

But while it might often be a bit drizzly and chilly here, particularly during the winter, we don\u2019t really have it too bad, all things considered.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not like we\u2019re dealing with the sweltering heat of Kuwait City in the\u00a0Middle East<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the world\u2019s hottest city<\/a>. Here, temperatures reach an unbearable 54\u00b0C, birds quite literally fall out of the sky, and they have to have air conditioning on the streets as it\u2019s so hot.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re also very fortunate not to be living in the\u00a0world\u2019s coldest city<\/a>, where the temperature can be as low as -64\u00b0C and frostbite is a constant risk.<\/p>\n

This chilly location is Yakutsk in Siberia,\u00a0Russia<\/a>, which is built on continuous permafrost, meaning the ground is permanently frozen. If that wasn\u2019t enough, in the winter, the city gets less than four hours of sunlight per day, making visibility incredibly low (less than five metres).<\/p>\n

Despite the incredibly challenging living conditions this presents, the city is home to more than 355,000 people, and residents aren\u2019t just surviving there; they\u2019re actually thriving.\u00a0Here\u2019s how they manage.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the weather like in Yakutsk?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As we\u2019ve heard, it\u2019s incredibly cold in Yakutsk, with temperatures well below -20\u00b0C from November through to February, and a December average of -37\u00b0C.<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s temperature once even plummeted to a record low of -64.4\u00b0C (in February 1891), and in January 2023, the city experienced the coldest weather in two decades at -62.7\u00b0C.<\/p>\n

In welcome news for locals, though, the weather begins to pick up by April, when the mercury finally rises above 0\u00b0C, and in June and July it can be a totally different story, with temperatures in summer reaching as high as 40\u00b0C.<\/p>\n

The warm season is thought to last from May to September, and the coldest time to visit is January.<\/p>\n

Alongside these fatally low temperatures, residents have to deal with \u2018ice fog\u2019 that occurs in winter, which occurs when the air is so cold that hot air cannot rise.<\/p>\n

How do people cope with the -42\u00b0C cold?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Living in the world\u2019s coldest city is a challenge, but those who do live there have adapted.<\/p>\n

Obviously, lots and lots of layers of clothing are an absolute must in Yakutsk, but even with all of these, people advise against going out in the most extreme weather conditions. And those that do shouldn\u2019t be out longer than 10 to 20 minutes.<\/p>\n

The university warns incoming students that it\u2019s \u2018not a good idea to walk out in the streets in winter when the temperature falls below -40\u00b0C.\u2019<\/p>\n

Kiun B, who has lived in Yakutsk all her life, gives us a glimpse into Yakutian life on TikTok and how she manages to get by in such harsh conditions.<\/p>\n

In one clip detailing her morning routine, Kiun shares how she prepares for going outside: thermals to start, then camel wool kneepads and socks to protect her joints and feet, insulated padded trousers, two padded jackets, a scarf, a hat, and traditional mittens and boots that ensure her extremities don\u2019t freeze.<\/p>\n
