Ever since I was a kid, one of my favourite parts of\u00a0Christmas\u00a0<\/a>has always been\u00a0deciding what TV to watch<\/a>, with family favourites including\u00a0Doctor Who<\/a>,\u00a0EastEnders\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0Strictly<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, there is a widespread feeling that in 2025 the TV schedule on December 25 was nowhere near as good as it used to be (except for shows like\u00a0Amandaland<\/a>).<\/p>\n

That might partly be because the line-up of shows airing on New Year\u2019s Day is \u2013 to put it simply \u2013 magnificent.<\/p>\n

Forget bingeing on TV on\u00a0Boxing Day<\/a>\u00a0while still in the stupor of your\u00a0Christmas<\/a>\u00a0food coma. Lying in bed all day on New Year\u2019s Day is where it\u2019s at this year.<\/p>\n

Here are the top recommendations from\u00a0Metro\u00a0<\/strong>on\u00a0<\/strong>what you need to be watching today, on the first day of 2026. You\u2019re welcome!<\/p>\n

The Traitors starts New Year\u2019s Day the right way on BBC<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0epic season finale of The Celebrity Traitors\u00a0<\/a>might have only aired in November, but we already can\u2019t wait for\u00a0The Traitors<\/a>\u00a0to deliver us backstabbing entertainment on New Year\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n

The BBC series \u2013 which has become a phenomenon \u2013 returns with its fourth civilian series at the very start of 2026.<\/p>\n

Fans are in for an especially huge treat, as there are going to be three episodes released on the trot between Thursday and Saturday that week.<\/p>\n

How could anyone top the masterclass of entertainment that\u00a0Alan Carr<\/a>\u00a0gave us in the celebrity version, when he somehow giggled and sweated his way to become the last Traitor standing?<\/p>\n

As usual, 22 people will be entering the grand castle in a bid to win \u00a3120,000, all the while overseen by the queen of dramatic knits, Claudia Winkleman.<\/p>\n

All will be working together to build the cash pot, but the Faithfuls will also be trying to root out the Traitors, who\u2019ll take all of the money home if they\u2019re still in the game by the final. Plus, the Faithfuls need to hope that they\u2019re not murdered in the night by the treacherous Traitors. We can\u2019t wait!<\/p>\n

Tom Hiddleston\u2019s spy drama The Night Manager finally returns<\/h2>\n

We\u2019ve done our waiting. Almost a decade of it. And finally, the wait has paid off\u2026 as The Night Manager is\u00a0back<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The thrilling BBC drama first came to our attention in 2016, introducing viewers to Tom Hiddleston\u2019s suave former soldier-turned-night manager.<\/p>\n

The show, which also starred acting heavyweights Hugh Laurie, Elizabeth Debicki and Tom Hollander, was the reason why people started pointing the finger at Tom as a possible contender to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond.<\/p>\n

Now, season two is launching just shy of 10 years later. Jonathan, who\u2019s been leading a quiet life since his dealings with the nefarious Richard Roper (Hugh), re-enters the world of espionage on a dangerous mission.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s reunited with national treasure Olivia Colman as Angela Burr, alongside Alistair Petrie as Sandy Langbourne and Noah Jupe as Richard\u2019s now-grown-up son, Daniel Roper.<\/p>\n

New cast members include Babylon star Diego Calva as Teddy, Daisy Jones and the Six star Camila Morrone as Roxana, and Game of Thrones star Indira Varma as Mayra.<\/p>\n

The Night Manager season 2 launches on January 1 at 9.05pm on BBC One.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s the final countdown for the epic Stranger Things farewell<\/h2>\n

I can\u2019t believe the day is almost here \u2013\u00a0Stranger Things is finally coming to an end with its fifth and final season<\/a>\u00a0on January 1, after just under 10 years.<\/p>\n

(Yes, there have been five whole seasons of Stranger Things, and only one of The Night Manager, despite them both launching in 2016).<\/p>\n

The final season of the spectacular sci-fi thriller created by the Duffer Brothers was split into three parts \u2013 the first coming out in November and the second on Boxing Day in the UK.<\/p>\n

It\u2019ll then culminate with a feature-length grand finale on the first day of the year. We have a feeling we\u2019re going to be in floods of tears finding out how the gangs\u2019 adventure draws to a close.<\/p>\n

Who\u2019ll live? Who\u2019ll die? Will Vecna be defeated? Is he truly evil after all? Is there more to the Upside Down that we still don\u2019t know?\u00a0We have so many questions!<\/em><\/p>\n
