Concept Chinese New Year.\" width=\"646\" height=\"413\" \/><\/div><figcaption>China is one of the most expensive places in the world to raise a child, according to a 2024 study (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As one retailer encouraged customers to stock up before prices rise, a social media user joked: \u2018I\u2019ll buy a lifetime\u2019s worth of condoms now.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Others pointed out that while condoms may become more expensive, the real barrier to parenthood is the high cost of raising a child.<\/p>\n<p>China is one of the most expensive places in the world to do so, according to a 2024 study by the YuWa Population Research Institute, which cited childcare burdens \u2013 especially for women \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/work\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article - Inline Links\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/work\/\">work<\/a>\u00a0pressures and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/school\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article - Inline Links\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/school\/\">school<\/a>\u00a0fees.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Luo, 36, who has one child and has no plans to have more, doesn\u2019t believe raising tax on contraceptives will lead to more babies.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s like when subway fares increase. When they go up by a yuan or two, people who take the subway don\u2019t change their habits. You still have to take the subway, right?\u2019 the 36-year-old, who lives in the eastern province of Henan, told the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/czxpk7r8w9yo\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/czxpk7r8w9yo\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article - Inline Links\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/czxpk7r8w9yo\">BBC.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Others, meanwhile, worry the tax could have unintended consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Rosy Zhao, who lives in the central city of Xi\u2019an, warned that making contraception more expensive could push students or people struggling financially to take risks.<\/p>\n<p>She said this would be \u2018the policy\u2019s most dangerous potential outcome\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Some experts question whether boosting birth rates is the real reason behind the tax introduction.<\/p>\n<p>Demographer Yi Fuxian suggests the government is instead looking to raise revenue as it grapples with rising debt and a property downturn.<\/p>\n<p>Henrietta Levin from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, meanwhile, believes the move was largely symbolic, reflecting Beijing\u2019s desire to show it is addressing what she called strikingly low fertility levels.<\/p>\n<p>But she warned that government efforts risk alienating people if they feel intrusive, adding: \u2018The [Communist] party can\u2019t help but insert itself into every decision that it cares about. So it ends up being its own worst enemy in some ways.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article-image wp-image-25980592\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SEI_279364674-ea0f.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" alt=\"mother with her baby\" width=\"646\" height=\"431\" \/><\/div><figcaption>Some experts suggest the tax rise has little to do with birth rates and is just a move to raise money (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her comments follow recent media reports that local officials have phoned up women in some provinces to ask about their menstrual cycles and plans to have children.<\/p>\n<p>The local\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/health-news\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article - Inline Links\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/health-news\/\">health<\/a>\u00a0bureau in Yunnan province claimed they needed the data to identify expectant mothers, the BBC reports.<\/p>\n<p>Other countries in the region, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/south-korea\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article - Inline Links\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/south-korea\/\">South Korea<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/japan\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"Article - Inline Links\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/japan\/\">Japan<\/a>, are also seeing a fall in birthrates.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Luo doesn\u2019t think rising costs are the only reason behind the drop, suggesting young people today are increasingly avoiding real human connection, leading to less couples and marriages.<\/p>\n<p>He cites a rise in sex toy purchases in China as a sign people are \u2018satisfying themselves\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 13% tax on contraceptives was introduced by\u00a0China\u00a0today in an effort to boost the country\u2019s birth rate.
