Ever woken up on\u00a0New Year\u2019s Day<\/a>\u00a0craving a sweaty sex session? You wouldn\u2019t be alone.<\/p>\n While it might sound appealing to spend the first day of the year ordering the entire\u00a0McDonald\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0menu and stretching out on the sofa to watch reruns of \u2018Friends\u2019, new data has revealed that people have much freakier to-do lists in mind.<\/p>\n As part of their annual Our Year in Cycles\u00a0analysis, period and ovulation app Clue found that in 2025, January 1 was officially the most popular day for sex across the whole world.<\/p>\n Having collected user\u2019s logged sexual activity, the app discovered that when it came to getting jiggy under the sheets, the first day of the year trounced even the likes of\u00a0Valentine\u2019s Day<\/a>\u00a0and summer holidays.<\/p>\n So, what is it about New Year\u2019s Day that\u2019s got us all so horny?<\/p>\n For a lot of people, waking up on New Year\u2019s Day is pure bliss: you have an entire day ahead of you to rot, without the fear of your Slack notifications popping off.<\/p>\n With your nervous system on pause, what better time to slot in a recreational activity or two?<\/p>\n And with Clue\u2019s data indicating that January 1 saw peaks in high sex drive, orgasms and fantasies, it\u2019s safe to say that users were experiencing a surge of intimacy.<\/p>\n Clue\u00a0chief medical officer Dr Charis Chambers tells\u00a0Metro<\/strong>: \u2018People are often surprised when they hear that January 1st is the most popular day for logging sex in the UK, but to me it reflects something fundamental about how our bodies and minds work.\u2019<\/p>\n Let\u2019s be real, no-one\u2019s aroused while trying to elbow your way past entitled\u00a0bulge blockers<\/a>\u00a0on the tube. Here are some of the main points they highlighted \u2013 how many do you tick?<\/p>\n With \u2018fewer obligations, fewer demands, and more physical closeness with our partners,\u2019 our stress-responses are able to take a back seat.<\/p>\n In fact, Gigi shares that \u2018from a psychophysiological perspective, this context is far more erotically supportive than a forced \u201cromantic\u201d holiday like Valentine\u2019s Day, which often comes with pressure and expectations (which are two major desire killers).\u2019<\/p>\n Madeleine Roantree, a psychologist who specialises in dating and relationships, adds: \u2018I think it\u2019s less about the symbolism of the date and more about the rare opportunity to rest deeply \u2014 something many of us don\u2019t get nearly enough of.\u2019<\/p>\n Something that definitely backs up Clue\u2019s data is the fact that September is the most popular month for births in the UK.<\/p>\n In fact, according to the\u00a0Office for National Statistics<\/a>, September 26 has been the most popular day to be born over the last two decades \u2013 this particular day falls 39 weeks and two days after\u00a0Christmas<\/a>\u00a0day.<\/p>\n Eight of the top 10 dates of birth were towards the end of September \u2013 with the other 2 being early October. This definitely backs up the idea that getting freaky on New Year\u2019s Day remains popular.<\/p>\n A number of couples sometimes favour getting pregnant at this time because of supposed academic advantages children can have at school if they\u2019re among the eldest in their year.<\/p>\n For example, a paper published by the\u00a0Centre for Educational Neuroscience<\/a>\u00a0found that at age seven, August-born pupils are 26 percentage points less likely to reach the nationally expected level than their September-born class-mates.<\/p>\n If you can\u2019t relate to this feeling, that\u2019s also totally understandable. Gigi reminds us that for plenty of people, New Year\u2019s Day is \u2019emotionally loaded\u2019.<\/p>\n \u2018It can be marked by\u00a0anxiety<\/a>, reflection, or dread about what\u2019s ahead in the year to come. Stress doesn\u2019t look the same for everyone, and neither does desire,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n And of course, the spike in app data on Janurary 1st might also reflect some New Year\u2019s revolutions, with people deciding to log their sexual and reproductive health more at the start of the year,\u00a0then gradually dropping off.<\/a><\/p>\n So, what should we take from the Clue data?
