Mopping grubby floors, sorting the laundry, and finally getting your house may seem like a positive way to start 2026.<\/p>\n

But if you need an excuse to relax after\u00a0last night\u2019s celebrations<\/a>, we\u2019ve got one right here: it\u2019s actually bad luck to\u00a0clean<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0New Year\u2019s Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s right, don\u2019t grab your bucket and bleach yet, because a long-standing superstition says you should avoid doing chores on January 1.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s why.<\/p>\n

Why is it bad luck to clean on New Year\u2019s Day?<\/h2>\n

The original folklore around cleaning at\u00a0New Year<\/a>\u00a0seems to\u00a0date back to Chinese traditions<\/strong>, but many cultures have their own superstitions, myths, and old wives\u2019 tales that say you should steer clear of it on January 1.<\/p>\n

In a number of countries, doing laundry on the first day of the year is said to \u2018wash away a loved one\u2019, meaning that a friend or family member will pass away in the following 364 days.<\/p>\n

Others claim washing clothes or dishes on New Year\u2019s Day will \u2018wash away good luck\u2019, or that sweeping the floors can also sweep away your good fortune. And if that\u2019s not a reason to steer clear of your to-do list, we don\u2019t know what is!<\/p>\n

Even emptying bins and taking out rubbish is a big no-no on New Year\u2019s Day \u2014 at least if you believe in the widespread superstition that removing things from the house could encourage prosperity to disappear.<\/p>\n

Some traditions from various parts of the world also say that what you do on the first day of the year will reflect how the rest of it pans out. So piling into the housework on January 1 suggests you\u2019re in for 52 weeks of hard, boring graft \u2014 and nobody wants that.<\/p>\n

Of course, these are all just myths. But we\u2019ll probably leave the bins, just in case.<\/p>\n

What brings good luck on New Year\u2019s Day?<\/h2>\n

Taking a break from housework certainly can\u2019t hurt, but there are several other\u00a0New Year traditions<\/a>\u00a0said to invite good luck, good fortune, and possibly even wealth into your life.<\/p>\n

These include:<\/p>\n
