Michael Owen says there isn\u2019t a \u2018standout\u2019 manager currently available to Manchester United and Michael Carrick could be a \u2018good choice\u2019 to take charge until the end of the season.<\/p>\n

The Red Devils brought Amorim\u2019s turbulent 14-month tenure to a halt on Monday<\/a>\u00a0and the search has begun for the seventh permanent manager of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.<\/p>\n

Amorim appeared to pave the way for his impending departure following United\u2019s 1-1 draw with Leeds as he\u00a0went on an explosive rant seemingly directed at the board<\/a>, in which he underlined his desire to be \u2018manager\u2019 and \u2018not just a coach\u2019.<\/p>\n

The Portuguese also suggested he would be prepared to walk when his contract was up at the end of the 2026\/27 season \u2013 a decision that was ultimately taken out of his hands.<\/p>\n

It means United are effectively managerless ahead of their trip to Burnley on Wednesday, with Under-18 boss Darren Fletcher taking over the reins on an interim basis for the Turf Moor contest.<\/p>\n

Asked if he felt it was the \u2018right decision\u2019 for United to part ways with Amorim, Owen told Premier League Productions: \u2018I think it was, yeah, I think eventually it was.<\/p>\n

\u2018I think this type of scenario or decision has been coming for a while but\u00a0Ruben Amorim<\/a>\u00a0has basically given\u00a0Manchester United<\/a>\u2019s hierarchy all the tools to say, \u201cRight, we\u2019ve had enough!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018I think they were probably 50-50 on whether to keep going anyway. The recent results have been in and out but certainly not enough to sack him in recent days.<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s certainly what has happened off the pitch and it\u2019s a little bit like what happened with Enzo Maresca not so many days ago.<\/p>\n

\u2018Amorim has just given them all the tools they needed to say, \u201cRight, okay, you\u2019ve had your time, it\u2019s not going well, you\u2019re now saying things that are detrimental to the club, we\u2019ve had enough\u2026 move on.\u201d\u2018<\/p>\n

A host of high-profile names have been linked with the vacant Old Trafford job in the intervening days, from Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner to ex-England manager Gareth Southgate.<\/p>\n

But Owen believes Carrick has proven himself to be an extremely capable manager at Middlesbrough, who sit second in the Championship, and could be a suitable fit at least until the end of the current season.<\/p>\n

Carrick briefly served as caretaker manager the wake of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer\u2019s sacking<\/a>\u00a0in late 2021 \u2013 overseeing a draw with Chelsea and wins over Villarreal and Arsenal.<\/p>\n

\u2018There\u2019s lots of different options I guess, there\u2019s no real standouts I would say.\u00a0Darren Fletcher<\/a>\u00a0is obviously going to take immediate control,\u2019 the former United, Liverpool, Real Madrid and England striker added.<\/p>\n

\u2018Maybe a Michael Carrick could be in the equation, certainly could be until the end of the season. Who knows?<\/p>\n

\u2018There will be a few managers that Manchester United have got their eyes on but are still in a job at the moment so it might be a little bit tricky.<\/p>\n

\u2018There are some great managers in the\u00a0Premier League<\/a>. I\u2019m looking at the managers of\u00a0Fulham<\/a>\u00a0[Marco Silva<\/a>],\u00a0Bournemouth<\/a>\u00a0[Andoni Iraola],\u00a0Crystal Palace<\/a>\u00a0[Oliver Glasner], maybe those types of managers could be earmarked.\u2019<\/p>\n

Owen, who played alongside Carrick for three years at Old Trafford, went on: \u2018You\u2019ve then got people out of work. We all know that Gareth Southgate is close friends with Sir Jim Ratcliffe.<\/p>\n

\u2018Then we\u2019ve got people from outside. Roberto De Zerbi has got a huge reputation.<\/p>\n

\u2018Mauricio Pochettino\u2026 Manchester United have always looked at him but surely he\u2019s not going to leave as head coach of the USA before the World Cup.<\/p>\n

\u2018So there\u2019s lots of names out there who could be linked.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Immediately, I would say somebody like Michael Carrick could be a good choice,\u2019 the 2001 Ballon d\u2019Or winner continued.<\/p>\n

\u2018Kieran McKenna at Ipswich\u2026 another young, talented manager. Who knows?<\/p>\n

\u2018As I say, there\u2019s not one manager that smacks me in the face to says that they\u2019re the obvious candidate.<\/p>\n

\u2018I think there are pros and cons surrounding quite a few of them at the moment.\u2019<\/p>\n
