Nick Reiner\u2019s lawyer, Alan Jackson, has removed himself from the\u00a0ongoing murder trial<\/a>\u00a0of Michele and\u00a0Rob Reiner<\/a>.<\/p>\n The filmmaker, 78, and his wife, 70,\u00a0were found dead<\/a>\u00a0in their\u00a0Los Angeles<\/a>\u00a0home on December 14.<\/p>\n The couple\u2019s 32-year-old son\u00a0<\/a>\u2013 who had battled addiction and was reportedly being treated for schizophrenia \u2013 has been\u00a0charged with their murders.<\/a><\/p>\n Reiner was in court today and expected to enter a plea on the two counts of first-degree murder but the hearing took a turn.<\/p>\n His lawyer, who previously represented Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, confirmed: \u2018We feel we have no choice but to withdraw\u2019.<\/p>\n Jackson spoke outside the courthouse, stating that it was due to \u2018circumstances beyond our control\u2019 and \u2018more importantly, beyond Nick\u2019s control.\u2019<\/p>\n He noted that legally he could not share any further details but said his team was \u2018deeply, deeply committed\u2019 to Reiner\u2019s best interests.<\/p>\n \u2018In fact, we\u2019re not just convinced, but we know that the legal process will reveal the true facts surrounding this case,\u2019 Jackson continued.<\/p>\n \u2018We dropped everything and we\u2019ve devoted literally every hour to protecting Nick,\u2019 he said. \u2018We\u2019ve investigated this matter top to bottom, back to front.<\/p>\n \u2018What we\u2019ve learned, and you can take this to the bank, that pursuant to the laws of this state Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder. We wish him the best moving forward.\u2019<\/p>\n The Public Defenders\u2019 Office are set to take over from now on, with Ricardo Garcia and Kimberley Green now assigned to the case.<\/p>\n Garcia said they are \u2018We are incredibly sorry for the pain and suffering the family is going through right now.\u2019<\/p>\n They asked for patience and understanding, with Green sharing that she had only briefly spoken to Reiner that morning.<\/p>\n The family were not informed of the change but the public defenders added that this kind of change is not uncommon.<\/p>\n Nathan Hochman, the LA district attorney, said: \u2018In our criminal justice system, every defendant is entitled to a lawyer, and we will make sure he gets that lawyer.<\/p>\n \u2018We will make sure they will get full discovery that pertains to the facts of this case to effectively represent their client in a court of law.<\/p>\n \u2018We are fully confident a jury will convict Nick of the brutal murder of his parents and will do so unanimously.\u2019<\/p>\n Deadline<\/a>\u00a0reported that the lawyers spoke with Nick and the judge for 10 minutes before returning to the courtroom.<\/p>\n No reason was given for this withdrawal, and the case was pushed back until February 23 to which Nick said: \u2018Yes, I agree.\u2019<\/p>\n A spokesperson for the Reiner family said: \u2018They have the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings.\u2019<\/p>\n Last month, Jackson spoke outside the court, calling it a case comprised of \u2018complex and serious issues\u2019 and urged the public not to \u2018rush to judgement\u2019.<\/p>\n The director and his wife\u2019s deaths have both been ruled homicides,\u00a0and\u00a0People<\/a>\u00a0revealed their deaths were caused \u2018with [a] knife, by another.\u2019<\/p>\n The time between the onset of injuries and death is also listed as \u2018minutes.\u2019<\/p>\n Their other children,<\/a>\u00a0Romy and Jake,\u00a0previously remembered<\/a>\u00a0the Princess Bride filmmaker and his wife as\u00a0their \u2018best friends\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n They said in a statement: \u2018Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day.<\/p>\n \u2018The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience.<\/p>\n \u2018They weren\u2019t just our parents; they were our best friends.\u2019<\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Nick Reiner\u2019s lawyer, Alan Jackson, has removed himself from the\u00a0ongoing murder trial\u00a0of Michele and\u00a0Rob Reiner.
