Donald Trump has confirmed he will the BBC over a spliced Panorama edit for \u2018anywhere between $1 billion to $5 billion\u2019.<\/p>\n

The broadcaster apologised to the US president after a clip of one of his speeches which appeared on\u00a0Panorama<\/a>\u00a0which was edited to appear as if he was explicitly urging people to attack the Capitol on January 6 2021.<\/p>\n

He said: \u2018We\u2019ll sue them. We\u2019ll sue them for anywhere between a billion (\u00a3792m) and five billion dollars (\u00a33.79bn), probably sometime next week.<\/p>\n

\u2018We have to do it, they\u2019ve even admitted that they cheated. Not that they couldn\u2019t have not done that. They cheated. They changed the words coming out of my mouth.\u2019<\/p>\n

The spliced clip implied that Trump told the crowd: \u2018We\u2019re going to walk down to the Capitol and I\u2019ll be there with you, and we fight. We fight like hell.\u2019<\/p>\n

The words broadcast were spoken by Trump almost an hour apart.<\/p>\n

The broadcaster told Trump it was an \u2018error of judgement\u2019 and the programme will \u2018not be broadcast again in this form on any BBC platforms\u2019.<\/p>\n

A BBC spokesperson said chairman Samir Shah has sent a personal letter to\u00a0the White House<\/a>\u00a0to apologise for the editing of the speech in the Panorama programme, but added: \u2018While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim.\u2019<\/p>\n

Trump threatened legal action after a report from Michael Prescott, a former external adviser to the BBC\u2019s Editorial Standards Committee.<\/p>\n

The edit of the speech played in the Panorama episode has recently attracted heavy criticism, with Mr Trump announcing his \u2018obligation\u2019 to launch a billion-dollar lawsuit against the BBC, and Prime Minister Sir\u00a0Keir Starmer<\/a>\u00a0saying the corporation needed to \u2018get their house in order\u2019.<\/p>\n

The scandal, for which the BBC has apologised, has also led to high-profile resignations, with BBC director-general Tim Davie and news chief Deborah Turness quitting on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The episode, Trump: A Second Chance? has been taken down from the BBC website and a retraction was published on the webpage on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n

It said: \u2018This programme was reviewed after criticism of how President Donald Trump\u2019s 6th January 2021 speech was edited.<\/p>\n

\u2018During that sequence, we showed excerpts taken from different parts of the speech.<\/p>\n

\u2018However, we accept that our edit unintentionally created the impression that we were showing a single continuous section of the speech, rather than excerpts from different points in the speech, and that this gave the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action.<\/p>\n

\u2018The BBC would like to apologise to President Trump for that error of judgement.<\/p>\n

\u2018This programme was not scheduled to be re-broadcast and will not be broadcast again in this form on any BBC platforms.\u2019<\/p>\n

Can Trump actually sue the BBC?<\/h2>\n

Robert Spritzer, an American political scientist and author, told\u00a0Metro\u00a0<\/strong>that the statute of limitations for when such a $1billion suit could be filed in Britain has passed.<\/p>\n

This means that if this suit goes forward, it would likely be filed in an American court, where the statute of limitations doesn\u2019t apply.<\/p>\n

Spritzer argues that the key to understanding Trump is realising litigation is one of his chief weapons that he\u2019s used for decades.<\/p>\n
