For Adnaan and Manny Malik, their dream business all began from their childhood bedroom.<\/p>\n

Before you ask, nope, they weren\u2019t filming\u00a0YouTube<\/a>\u00a0clips and putting them online. They were dreaming of how they would become millionaires \u2013 and what they needed to do to get there.<\/p>\n

Fast forward to 2025, that same bedroom that Adnaan and Manny plotted their futures is now their office for their business, Malik Butchers.<\/p>\n

Originally run by their father, they took over the business in 2009 after spending their childhoods waking up to the smell of smoke and meat wafting through their home.<\/p>\n

Adnaan told: \u2018There was always a buzz of activity like a real community hub \u2013 it was a very wholesome place to grow up in.\u2019<\/p>\n

The business was started by their grandad in\u00a0Kenya<\/a>\u00a0before political uncertainty eventually made him relocate to Wolverhampton.<\/p>\n

He worked in the shop for many years before selling it to his son-in-law, Wali Muhammed Malik \u2013 the brothers\u2019 father.<\/p>\n

Their dad was an incredibly hard worker who never had a holiday, rarely ate dinner with his family or go out with friends.<\/p>\n

Adnaan said: \u2018From the moment I remember my father, he was consistently in the shop.<\/p>\n

\u2018His life was to make sure everything was sorted \u2013 we\u2019ve got money and the kids are being fed.<\/p>\n

\u2018It was one of those things where I was thinking, well, everyone else\u2019s dad finishes work at 6pm but mine doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u2018But now, looking back at it, I\u2019m glad it was the way it was and I appreciate the hustle of the man.<\/p>\n

As the two youngest brothers, they have revolutionised their father\u2019s traditional halal butchers into a modern success that has gained mass popularity with all communities, not just\u00a0Muslim<\/a>\u00a0customers.<\/p>\n

he toughest time for the business was in the 1990s as more\u00a0supermarkets<\/a>\u00a0began opening and customers dwindled \u2013 they couldn\u2019t be stuck in their own ways for much longer.<\/p>\n

The big shift for the business was from a retail-focused shop to being more wholesale focused for meat.<\/p>\n

In 2009, their father, who needed to retire, reluctantly handed over control to Adnaan.<\/p>\n

Adnaan never saw a future of being happy as a butcher because, growing up, he always saw the work as a chore and despised the meat industry and everything it stood for.<\/p>\n

He added he used to be embarrassed about halal butchers when seeing the British counterparts.<\/p>\n

The business had a good run but it was \u2018stagnant with the usual rough-and-ready, cheap and troublesome customers,\u2019 said Adnaan who describes that time as letting him have an easy existence.<\/p>\n

Manny said: \u2018With halal butchery, it\u2019s well known for being an unpleasant experience in store.<\/p>\n

\u2018Going into a butcher shop it would be smelly, you\u2019d have flies and it wouldn\u2019t be particularly hygienic.<\/p>\n

\u2018The choice and selection wouldn\u2019t be there either.\u2019<\/p>\n

One big influence for him changing the ways of halal butchery was satellite TV, specifically the sitcom\u00a0Only Fools and Horses<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2018The way Del Boy would eat his full English in the cafe made me think I want to eat that because he made it look so good.<\/p>\n

\u2018So me and Manny used to recreate a full English with fish fingers, waffles and sometimes even kebab.<\/p>\n

\u2018We also used to put Coca-Cola in\u00a0coffee<\/a>\u00a0mugs and pretend it was black coffee.\u2019<\/p>\n

Growing up and not being able to eat something that everyone else was because it wasn\u2019t halal made the brothers feel like outsiders.<\/p>\n

Adnaan then had a eureka moment \u2013 why not make chicken and beef sausages, lamb ham and beef bacon all within the family\u2019s butcher shop?<\/p>\n

As the brothers are Muslim, this means they and many of their customers aren\u2019t allowed to eat pork. So Adnaan and Manny began making halal-friendly versions of the food they saw on Only Fools and Horses.<\/p>\n

Adnaan\u2019s ideas didn\u2019t stop there. He wanted the butchers to focus on high-quality, premium meats and a deli selling sandwiches, toasties, burgers and more.<\/p>\n

Manny remembers saying: \u2018It sounds incredible. But we\u2019re in\u00a0Wolverhampton<\/a>\u00a0so who is going come to your shop to buy a sandwich?\u2019<\/p>\n

Adnaan was determined, saying it was either this crazy idea or leaving the business completely.<\/p>\n

So they went for it. On the 50th anniversary of the shop in 2020, they closed the shop temporarily and renovated it.<\/p>\n

When they reopened, they started using\u00a0social media<\/a>\u00a0to make tongue-in-cheek sketches teaching people about halal food.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve said it\u2019s helped them attract customers to non-Muslim customers while dispelling people\u2019s fears and misunderstandings of halal butchers.<\/p>\n

Their father still pops in every day, like clockwork, and still hasn\u2019t fully let go of the business.<\/p>\n

In the corner of the shop, there is \u2018Abu\u2019s chair\u2019 where he will come and sit for hours at a time.<\/p>\n

Adnaan described him as \u2018an old-school immigrant father who\u2019s emotionless but he does the little things to show he\u2019s proud.\u2019<\/p>\n

Although their father doesn\u2019t eat their sausages as he associates them with being non-halal, he will stand there telling customers how brilliant they are.<\/p>\n

Their \u2018alpha, aggressive\u2019 mum is also an inspiration to them as she would be able to cook up something from nothing. They even sell a chutney named after her in the shop.<\/p>\n

Amidst all the swearing and bickering, the brothers work well together, leading to their success.<\/p>\n

\u2018We\u2019re making an old, stinky, smelly sector sexy,\u2019 said Adnaan.<\/p>\n

But what they are also doing is changing the stereotypes about Muslims during a time of much conflict.<\/p>\n
