The UK will stop automatically providing accommodation and other support to asylum seekers, as part of a major overhaul to the migration system.<\/p>\n
Currently, there is a legal duty under EU law to provide financial assistance to anyone who arrives in the country and claims asylum.<\/p>\n
Under the package being announced by Home Secretary\u00a0Shabana Mahmood<\/a>\u00a0tomorrow, the\u00a0government<\/a>\u00a0will be able to deny that support to people under certain circumstances.<\/p>\n Refugee status is also set to be made temporary, with a review every 30 months. Those with the status will be told to go home once it is deemed safe to do so.<\/p>\n And the UK will adopt the longest pathway to citizenship in Europe for those granted asylum, making them wait for 20 years if they arrived illegally.<\/p>\n The\u00a0Home Office<\/a>\u00a0described the move as \u2018the most sweeping reforms to tackle illegal migration in modern times\u2019, saying they would remove incentives that draw people to get in small boats.<\/p>\n But the changes have been described as \u2018harsh and unnecessary\u2019 by the Refugee Council, which said it would lead to more vulnerable people sleeping rough on British streets.<\/p>\n Mahmood has based her new approach on the system introduced by the Danish government.<\/p>\n The Scandinavians attracted wide attention for driving asylum claims to their lowest point in 40 years, while deporting 95% of those who do not meet stringent criteria.<\/p>\n Labour<\/a>\u00a0has also highlighted the fact that the country did not need to leave the European Convention on Human Rights, as the\u00a0Conservatives<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Reform<\/a>\u00a0have proposed, to carry out their plan.<\/p>\n The Home Secretary said: \u2018This country has a proud tradition of welcoming those fleeing danger, but our generosity is drawing illegal migrants across the channel.<\/p>\n \u2018The pace and scale of migration is placing immense pressure on communities.\u2019<\/p>\n In an interview with the\u00a0Sunday Times<\/a>, Mahmood said illegal migration \u2018is tearing our country apart\u2019.<\/p>\n She added: \u2018It\u2019s our job as a Labour government to unite our country and if we don\u2019t sort this out, I think our country becomes much more divided.\u2019<\/p>\n But Refugee Council CEO Enver Solomon warned making the current system \u2018more punitive\u2019 will not be a deterrent to desperate people.<\/p>\n He said: \u2018Men, women and children seek safety in the UK because they have family here, they speak some English, or they have long-standing ties that help them rebuild their lives in safety.<\/p>\n \u2018The government should be ensuring that refugees are able to settle into their new communities so they can contribute as proud Britons, in the way so many have done for generations.\u2019<\/p>\n The latest changes are described as the biggest overhaul to the asylum system since the Second World War.
