The man who was killed by federal immigration agents in\u00a0Minneapolis<\/a>\u00a0yesterday has been identified as\u00a037-year-old ICU nurse Alex Jeffrey Pretti.<\/a><\/p>\n

Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem labelled Mr Pretti a \u2018domestic terrorist\u2019, while Border Patrol Commander\u00a0Gregory Bovino<\/a>\u00a0suggested he was plotting to \u2018massacre law enforcement\u2019.<\/p>\n

However, the\u00a0New York Times<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Guardian<\/a>\u00a0have said videos from the scene back up eyewitness accounts who say Mr Pretti never drew his gun, which he was legally permitted to carry.<\/p>\n

An angry crowd gathered after the shooting and screamed profanities at federal officers, calling them \u2018cowards\u2019 and telling them to go home.<\/p>\n

One officer responded mockingly as he walked away, telling them: \u2018Boo hoo.\u2019<\/p>\n

Pretti attended the University of Minnesota, studying biology, society and the environment. After a brief stint working as a scientist, he returned to\u00a0school<\/a>\u00a0and became a nurse.<\/p>\n

Before being killed, Pretti worked at the local Veterans Affairs Medical Centre in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n

President of the local federal employees labour union, Everett Kelley, said: \u2018This tragedy did not happen in a vacuum. It is the direct result of an administration that has chosen reckless policy, inflammatory rhetoric, and manufactured crisis over responsible leadership and de-escalation.\u2019<\/p>\n

Pretti\u2019s colleague, Dr Dmitri Drekonja, told ABC News he was \u2018enraged\u2019 to hear how officials were portraying him.<\/p>\n

Mr Pretti\u2019s parents said the \u2018sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting\u2019.<\/p>\n

They said: \u2018Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump\u2019s murdering and cowardly\u00a0ICE<\/a>\u00a0thugs.<\/p>\n

\u2018He has his\u00a0phone<\/a>\u00a0in his right hand, and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down, all while being pepper-sprayed. Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man.\u2019<\/p>\n

Michael Pretti, Alex\u2019s father, told AP his son got involved in protests because he \u2018cared\u2019 about people.<\/p>\n

\u2018He thought it was terrible, you know, kidnapping children, just grabbing people off the street. He cared about those people, and he knew it was wrong, so he did participate in protests,\u2019 Michael said.<\/p>\n
