{"id":5117,"date":"2026-01-27T08:26:46","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T08:26:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/badvibes.live\/?p=5117"},"modified":"2026-01-27T08:26:46","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T08:26:46","slug":"meet-the-ai-receptionist-picking-up-the-phone-for-1000000-gp-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/badvibes.live\/?p=5117","title":{"rendered":"Meet the \u2018AI receptionist\u2019 picking up the phone for 1,000,000 GP patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\"><figcaption>MMA\u2019 stands for \u2018Enhanced Medical Management Assistant\u2019 (Picture: Getty)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At this very moment in time, millions of people will be ringing up their local GP desperately trying to get an appointment.<\/p>\n<p>But for Joan Downing, a patient in Doncaster, she\u2019s having a completely different experience.<\/p>\n<p>Since October, Joan is one of many patients who is engaging with an AI receptionist \u2013 rather than a real-life person \u2013 at the Conisbrough Group Practice in Doncaster.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018virtual receptionist\u2019, known as EMMA, which stands for \u2018Enhanced Medical Management Assistant\u2019, now picks up the phone for Joan as well as 1,000,000 other GP patients.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article-image wp-image-25557672\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/SEI_278277199-899f.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" alt=\"Meet the UK's first 'AI receptionist'solving the 8am GP rush\" width=\"646\" height=\"861\" \/><\/div><figcaption>GP bosses put up posters promoting the AI receptionist service in August (Picture: Conisbrough Group Practice)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The phone system, created by the AI start-up\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quantumloopai.com\/\">QuantumLoopAI<\/a>, records patient details, prioritises their requests and signposts them to GPs.<\/p>\n<p>For Joan, who cares for her brother with complex medical needs, it\u2019s been a huge time saver.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Sometimes I\u2019d put the phone down as I was in the queue for so long, it seemed like I\u2019d never be number one,\u2019 the 70-year-old told\u00a0<strong>Metro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018But since they\u2019ve rolled out Emma, it\u2019s been so much quicker. I once had a call back within 15 minutes, which is off the scale.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"metro-iframe iframe-autoheight \" src=\"https:\/\/embed.acast.com\/%24\/35d3734f-1e29-4d0b-a646-15776be08249\" name=\"6978769308047\" width=\"100%\" height=\"120px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Only four in 10 patients see their GP on the day<\/h2>\n<p>Medical care in the UK has become a waiting game \u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/09\/09\/mum-died-waiting-11-hours-ambulance-wont-forget-cries-24003028\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\">\u00a0waiting hours for ambulances<\/a>, days for GP appointments and<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/04\/13\/i-love-nhs-im-willing-pay-avoid-it-20159685\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\">\u00a0years for surgeries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Family doctors are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/2025\/06\/gp-practices-improve-access-embracing-technology-increasing-appointments\/\">\u00a0increasingly leaning on technology<\/a>, such as digital hotlines, to help see patients.<\/p>\n<p>Now, such tech includes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\">AI<\/a>, which is plugging the gaps of GP services buckling under growing pressure \u2013 for better or for worse.<\/p>\n<p>Joan said the first time she used EMMA was in October, when her brother was suffering from fluid build-up in his legs.<\/p>\n<p>Within the hour, Joan said, her GP sent a paramedic to treat her brother\u2019s symptoms \u2013 a side effect of his medication, Joan was told.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article-image wp-image-25325057\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/SEI_277429354-5b39.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" alt=\"Confident businesswoman talking on mobile phone and checking the time on her wristwatch.\" width=\"646\" height=\"363\" \/><\/div><figcaption>The \u20188am GP rush\u2019 has long been a problem (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018As a senior, technology can be scary,\u2019 Joan said, \u2018I\u2019m not used to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/robots\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">robots<\/a>. I just want to go to the doctor. After my experience with EMMA, if this is the future, then it\u2019s all going to be exceptional.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Many GP surgeries open their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/smartphones\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">phone<\/a>\u00a0lines at 8am, meaning patients requiring an on-the-day appointment have to phone on the dot.<\/p>\n<p>This leads to the \u20188am rush\u2019, where phone lines are jammed with calls. Patients say they are held in long queues only to be told all the appointments have been booked up.<\/p>\n<p>Not every doctor\u2019s office works like this, with some offering online bookings or phone call-back service<\/p>\n<p>But only four in 10 patients see their GP on the same day they booked, according to NHS data. As many as one in 10 wait 28 days.<\/p>\n<p>The government said patients should get an appointment with their GP practice within two weeks, and that patients with urgent needs should be seen on the same day.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/26867723\" data-secret=\"26SPCzpqeI\"><\/div>\n<p>A single full-time GP is now responsible for an average of\u00a02,236 patients; that\u2019s\u00a0299 more than in September 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Imran Khan, the CEO of QuantumLoopAI, tells\u00a0<strong>Metro\u00a0<\/strong>that EMMA was built with NHS GPs in mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Crucially, EMMA isn\u2019t just another phone assistant,\u2019 Khan said. \u2018She\u2019s the first intelligent call-handling system that has been built over a period of two years with input and feedback from real reception teams and clinicians.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Bex Cottey, a business manager at Joan\u2019s GP, said the practice turned to EMMA after a receptionist left.<\/p>\n<p>Receptionists, Cottey said, \u2018receive the best and the worst from our patients daily\u2019, and she struggled to hire a replacement.<\/p>\n<p>On a typical Monday for the clinic of 12,000 patients, four of the clinic\u2019s six staff members would need to be answering phones.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\" data-ico=\"factbox_article\" data-track-module=\"factbox_article\">\n<h2 class=\"factbox-title\">Prefer us to the others? Some have embraced them, others have not.<\/p>\n<p>And none are being regulated by the NHS, Dr Fisher, a GP, tells\u00a0<strong>Metro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This could be yet another way that health inequalities are being baked in, precisely when the government aims to reduce disparities in general practice,\u2019 she adds.<\/p>\n<p>Many doctors\u2019 offices are facing rising demand and struggle to recruit and retain staff.
