It\u2019s that time of year again folks!<\/p>\n
Supermarket<\/a>\u00a0and lunch chains are swapping\u00a0ham and cheese<\/a>\u00a0for brie and bacon, as they stock the shelves with\u00a0Christmas<\/a>\u00a0sarnies galore.<\/p>\n Each year the selection gets bigger and bigger and when you\u2019re in a rush on your lunch break, trying to pick between them all can feel like an arduous task.<\/p>\n But fear not, the team at\u00a0Metro<\/strong>\u00a0have made the decision a little easier for you in the run up to December, as we\u2019ve tried a bunch of them in a bid to find the best.<\/p>\n Now you won\u2019t have to chew your way through soggy bread, sad spinach leaves and scraps of turkey.<\/p>\n For this taste test, we picked two sandwiches from each of the major supermarkets and\u00a0high street<\/a>\u00a0retailers: One classic Christmas sandwich, and one that\u2019s new and exciting for 2025.<\/p>\n We\u2019ve given each one a rating out of five and shared a breakdown of what\u2019s in it.<\/p>\n Some of our top rated might surprise you \u2014 and there was one offering that scored a measly 1\/5.<\/p>\n So without further ado, here are our honest reviews\u2026<\/p>\n What\u2019s in it?\u00a0<\/strong>A returning item that first launched in 2024, this sandwich is a \u2018transatlantic take\u2019 on a classic and features pastrami-style turkey, maple-cured bacon, Emmental cheese, and gherkin mayo, all served on rye and caraway bread.<\/p>\n What we thought:\u00a0<\/strong>If there\u2019s one thing Americans know how to do, it\u2019s make a sandwich and this is combines some of the best \u2013 a BLT and a Turkey Swiss. The combination is an absolute winner, although, admittedly, maybe not the most festive of all flavours. It\u2019s only really Christmassy because it\u2019s got turkey and the maple-cured bacon and cheese make it rather indulgent. But someone who has never been the biggest fan of Christmas sandwiches, I\u2019m really not mad about it. It\u2019s a cracking sandwich, that\u2019s got just the right amount of everything inside and the flavours are fantastic \u2013 peppery, smoky and a little sweet, with tang from the pickle mayo.<\/p>\n This is one of the best supermarket sandwiches I\u2019ve ever had, by a long shot.<\/p>\n Verdict:\u00a0<\/strong>5\/5<\/p>\n What\u2019s in it?\u00a0<\/strong>This one is brand new for Christmas 2025 and sees a soft brioche bagel filled with brie, rashers of applewood smoked maple-cured bacon, finished with a cranberry and chilli chutney and spinach and rocket.<\/p>\n What we thought:\u00a0<\/strong>Sorry\u00a0Tesco<\/a>, just because something is round and has a hole in the middle, it doesn\u2019t mean you should call it a bagel. The bread is too soft and sweet. It\u2019s not bad at all, it\u2019s a very nice brioche \u2013 it\u2019s just not a bagel.<\/p>\n Ok, now that little rant is out of the way, onto the rest of the sarnie\u2026 The fillings are classic and pair well together, and the chutney has a subtle kick of spice to it, which elevates the whole thing. I imagine it would taste even better if it was popped under the grill for a few minutes, so the brie is wonderfully melty. Overall, this one isn\u2019t groundbreaking, but it\u2019s a solid option if you love a brie and cranberry sandwich at this time of year.<\/p>\n Verdict:\u00a0<\/strong>4\/5<\/p>\n What\u2019s in it?<\/strong>\u00a0A new option for 2025, according to Pret, this flatbread features: \u2018roasted butternut squash, peppery rocket with chestnut & herb stuffing. Served with a spoonful of sage mayo, pistachios and crispy onion.\u2019<\/p>\n What we thought:\u00a0<\/strong>At Christmas, I\u2019m eating at least 17 pigs in blankets, so I wasn\u2019t convinced a veggie offering could bring the festive vibes. But dare I say it was my favourite of the two from Pret. The butternut squash is tasty, but it\u2019s the stuffing that\u2019s the standout here: crunchy, without being too dry, just the right amount of sweet thanks to the cranberry, and packed full of flavour. The so-called \u2018crispy\u2019 onion is anything but, but it tastes good, nonetheless. The whole flatbread is giving \u2018delicious nut roast\u2019 that\u00a0Mary Berry<\/a>\u00a0would be proud of. I\u2019m not a massive rocket fan, and there\u2019s a generous layer, but the other flavours were (thankfully) enough to overpower it.<\/p>\nA quick look<\/h2>\n
