scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But a new report by China\u2019s state-run news agency,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tv.cctv.com\/2026\/01\/08\/VIDE80haQtl29WcgTVGCHJoW260108.shtml?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">CCTV<\/a>, suggests that military officials could be moving to make them a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Another craft being considered is the \u2018White Emperor\u2019 space fighter, which the broadcaster compared to the Transformers.<\/p>\n<p>Computer-generated footage shows two of the sleek crafts tearing through the skies and taking down enemy aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>A 1:1 scale model of the sci-jet, also called Bai Di, was unveiled at the 2024 China Air show \u2013 though not quite fully operational just yet.<\/p>\n<p>A mock-up of a third futuristic craft, \u2018Purple Fire\u2019, was seen last year at the Helicopter\u00a0China\u00a0Expo at Port of Tianjin.<\/p>\n<p>The plane has a \u2018bladeless tail\u2019 and can travel up to 88km per hour to carry out rescue operations and deliver supplies, according to CCTV.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article-image wp-image-26706197\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/jets-85e6.gif?w=440\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"248\" \/><\/div><figcaption>Experts say the tech isn\u2019t quite there yet to make needed for a craft to hover in Earth\u2019s low orbit, up to 1,200 miles above the planet, let alone above it, is not possible.<\/p>\n<p>Space defence experts previously told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/12\/18\/tiny-paint-flecks-knock-internet-moment-experts-say-25586022\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\">Metro\u00a0<\/a>that even flecks of paint can pose a problem to modern spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese military analyst Wang Mingzhi said of the Nantianmen Project last month that these weapons are still very much in a conceptual stage.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u2018These discrete cutting-edge technologies are not a question of whether they can be realised, but rather which ones will be realised first and when.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Defence experts, however, are sceptical of whether the project by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China can ever happen.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article-image wp-image-26705439\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/SEI_283387695-e1a5.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2026\/02\/03\/china-unveils-star-wars-space-carrier-luanniao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Telegraph<\/a>\u00a0that the Luanniao would \u2018outclass pretty much everyone\u2019 but would require incalculable amounts of fuel.<\/p>\n<p>The project is more of a \u2018stunt\u2019 to show Beijing\u2019s military force.<\/p>\n<p>Layton added: \u2018For the external audience, it does paint the picture that they are working on technology that the region just can\u2019t aspire to \u2013 it\u2019s literally Star Wars stuff.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>China has long been \u2018number two\u2019 to the US when it comes to space advancements.<\/p>\n<p>The pair is currently racing to be the first to bring humans back to the moon \u2013 and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/24\/china-plans-build-nuclear-plant-moon-power-base-shared-russia-22962883\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\">perhaps build a lunar base or two\u00a0<\/a>while they\u2019re there.<\/p>\n<p>But as much as Beijing has long been held back by its lack of reusable rocket launchpads and satellites, this is changing.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article-image wp-image-26705445\" back moon samples, built giant rockets and completed the first major state-run space station, Tiangong, all thanks to ever-increasing government funding.<\/p>\n<p>NASA, meanwhile, has faced budget cuts and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2026\/02\/03\/nasa-delays-humanitys-long-awaited-return-moon-26684552\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\">its lunar missions have suffered numerous delays<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The advocacy group, the Commercial Space Federation, said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commercialspace.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/CSF-Redshift-v6.pdf\">report\u00a0<\/a>last year that it\u2019s only a matter of time before China will overtake the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018China is living its Apollo, ISS, and commercial space eras all at once,\u2019 the report authors said.<\/p>\n<p>Andriy Dovbenko, the founder of UK-Ukraine\u00a0TechExchange, which works with Ukrainian defence startups, told\u00a0<strong>Metro\u00a0<\/strong>that the \u2018Star Wars warship\u2019 certainly seems
