The last remaining nuclear arms pact between\u00a0Russia<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0United States<\/a>\u00a0has expired, setting the stage for what many fear could be a new, unconstrained nuclear arms race.<\/p>\n

Russian President\u00a0Vladimir Putin<\/a>\u00a0last year said he was ready to stick to the treaty\u2019s limits for another year if Washington did the same, but US President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0has been noncommittal.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday night said in a statement that it was \u2018no longer bound by obligations within the treaty\u2019 and was \u2018free to choose its next steps\u2019.<\/p>\n

Florian Eblenkamp, advocacy officer with The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) told BADVIBES\u00a0<\/strong>he believes the world is already in the middle of an arms race.<\/p>\n

\u2018What people often get wrong is that the Cold War stayed \u201ccold\u201d because leaders realised the risk of nuclear war was too high,\u2019 he explained.<\/p>\n

This realisation led to a series of arms control and disarmament agreements, almost all of which are now gone or dysfunctional \u2013 making the risk \u2018even higher\u2019 now than it was in the Cold War, he warned.<\/p>\n

\u2018This arms race may not stay cold forever. Nuclear weapons are becoming \u201cthinkable\u201d to use again. That is why we must continue promoting a universal ban,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n

The New Start Treaty, signed in 2010 by then-US president\u00a0Barack Obama<\/a>\u00a0and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev, restricted each side to no more than 1,550 nuclear warheads on no more than 700 missiles and bombers \u2013 deployed and ready for use.<\/p>\n

Yet, the agreement, while important on capping nuclear limits, was a sort of \u2018band-aid\u2019 for the nuclear issue, Eblenkamp said.<\/p>\n

He also said the idea that each country should have its own\u00a0nuclear weapons<\/a>\u00a0in the name of \u2018safety\u2019 is a foolish idea.<\/p>\n

\u2018Quite the opposite would happen,\u2019 he said. \u2018This is especially true for countries in Europe. A potential nuclear war between the US and Russia would be fought without European governments having any control over that risk.\u2019<\/p>\n

Eblenkamp argued that removing American nuclear weapons stationed in European countries and removing Russian nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus would be a significant step toward sanity.<\/p>\n

When all is said and done, the expiration of the New Start treaty is a symptom of a larger issue.<\/p>\n

\u2018With trust eroding between the US and Russia, there will be more reliance on other countries to facilitate this arms race. The UK and other European countries are right in the middle of it, and that\u2019s a problem.<\/p>\n
