His body has never been found after the disaster in the Humber Estuary.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Motin had shown a \u2018blatant disregard for the very high risk of death\u2019 and fallen prey to his own complacency and arrogance, the judge said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article-image months after he died in the UK waters.<\/p>\n<p>Motin, from St Petersburg, was found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence on Monday after a jury\u2019s eight-hour deliberation, and he has now been sentenced.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Justice Andrew Baker said the captain\u2019s account of what happened was \u2018highly implausible\u2019 and that it was \u2018extremely problematic,\u2019 \u2018improbable\u2019 and \u2018even worse\u2019 than the prosecution\u2019s version of events.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\"><img giving two different accounts to the police and the jurors, led the jurors on a \u2018merry dance\u2019 in his evidence, which was an \u2018exercise in inventive distraction.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u2018His claim to be confused was a lie that unravelled when tested at trial.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The crash involving the two massive vessels with flammable cargo sparked a search and rescue operation in the estuary and beyond, with fears that it could lead to a large-scale environmental disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Solong continued to burn for hours as it drifted along the East Yorkshire coast flanked by tugboats following the crash, while the US-flagged Stena Immaculate miraculously stayed anchored.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-5466-2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" court heard previously what happened just before the collisions, with Motin identified as responsible for multiple failures in the lead-up to the crash and lying about his actions in the aftermath.<\/p>\n<p>Solong, measuring around 426-feet and weighing around 7,852 tonnes, had left Grangemouth in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/scotland\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Scotland<\/a>\u00a0on March 9, headed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/rotterdam\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Rotterdam<\/a>\u00a0in the Netherlands with 14 crew members on board.<\/p>\n<p>It was carrying alcoholic spirits and some hazardous substances, including empty but unclean sodium cyanide containers.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Stena Immaculate and its crew of 23 had left\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/greece\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Greece<\/a>\u00a0on its way to the UK when Solong rammed into it.<\/p>\n<p>The 601-foot tanker was laden with over 220,000 barrels of aviation fuel destined for US aircraft.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"article-image wp-image-26720033\" Wire)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Stena Immaculate was visible on Solong\u2019s radars 36 minutes before the smash, but Motin did nothing to steer away, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecutors detailed a string of failures by the captain, including failing to call for help, slow down, sound the alarm to alert crews on both ships or instigate an emergency stop as a last resort.<\/p>\n<p>Jurors heard how Motin had allegedly switched off the navigation watch alert system designed to ensure a sailor is physically on the bridge and awake, leading to accusations that he may have been asleep.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"metro-iframe iframe-autoheight \" src=\"https:\/\/i.metro.co.uk\/i\/html_modules\/2026\/02_FEB\/260205_MV_Stena_FULL\/index.html\" failures were labelled \u2018exceptionally bad, they amount to gross negligence\u2019 by the prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>After Solong\u2019s impact with the tanker at a speed of 15.2 knots (around 17.4 mph), Stena\u2019s crew reacted instantly and radioed the chilling announcement: \u2018Holy s**t\u2026 what just hit us\u2026 a container ship\u2026 this is no drill, this is no drill, fire fire fire, we have had a collision.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>There was reportedly a full minute before Motin was heard to react.<\/p>\n<p>Motin and the remaining Solong crew abandoned ship and were taken ashore in Grimsby.<\/p>\n<p>The captain messaged his wife from ashore, saying he would be \u2018guilty.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\"><img denied.<\/p>\n<p>He told the jury in his defence that he didn\u2019t take action immediately when he saw Stena Immaculate directly ahead because it was moving slowly but unpredictably.<\/p>\n<p>Motin said he then pressed the wrong button by \u2018mistake\u2019 when trying to take Solong out of autopilot and steer away one nautical mile away (around 1.1 miles).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He told jurors he didn\u2019t realise the error and proceeded to stop and restart the steering gear to no effect, causing him to think Solong may have developed a rudder fault similar to its sister vessel, Sanskip Express.<\/p>\n<p>Fearing the Solong could smash into Stena\u2019s accommodation block and kill the American sailors, he decided against a crash stop, Motin argued in his defence.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Baker said this explanation was \u2018desperate stuff.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors suggested that Motin had lief about what happened to \u2018get back to his wife\u2019 in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/russia\/\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Russia<\/a>\u00a0and gave differing accounts to police and
