Eddie is applying for a job as a signalman for the local railroad and is told to meet the inspector at the signal box.
\nThe inspector decides to give Eddie a pop quiz, asking: `What would you do if you realized that two trains were heading towards each other on the same track?`<\/p>\n
Eddie says: `I would switch one train to another track.`<\/p>\n
What if the lever broke?` asks the inspector.<\/p>\n
`Then I`d run down to the tracks and use the manual lever down there`, answers Eddie.<\/p>\n
`What if that had been struck by lightning?` challenges the inspector.<\/p>\n
`Then,` Eddie continued, `I`d run back up here and use the phone to call the next signal box.`<\/p>\n
`What if the phone was busy?`<\/p>\n
`In that case,` Eddie argued, `I`d run to the street level and use the public phone near the station`.<\/p>\n
`What if that had been vandalized?`<\/p>\n
`Oh well,` said Eddie, `in that case I would run into town and get my Uncle Lou`.<\/p>\n
This puzzled the inspector, so he asked, `Why would you do that?`<\/p>\n
`Because he`s never seen a train accident.`<\/p>\n
A passenger train is creeping along slowly.
\nFinally, it creaks to a halt. A passenger sees a conductor walking outside.<\/p>\n
\u2018What\u2019s going on?\u2019 she yells out of the window.<\/p>\n
\u2018Cow on the track!\u2019 replies the conductor.<\/p>\n
Ten minutes later, the train resumes its slow pace. Within five minutes, however, it stops again.<\/p>\n
The woman sees the same conductor walking outside. She leans out of the window and yells,<\/p>\n
\u2018What happened? Did we catch up with the cow again?\u2019<\/p>\n
The blonde wife came home from her first day commuting into the city.
\nHer husband noticed she was looking a little peaked and asked, \u201cHoney, are you feeling all right?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNot really,\u201d she replied. \u201cI\u2019m nauseated from sitting backward on the train.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cPoor dear,\u201d he said. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you ask the person sitting across from you to switch seats for a while?\u201d<\/p>\n
