This is the sign greeting customers at a bar<\/a> in Greater Manchester<\/a>, which doesn\u2019t allow anyone in if they\u2019re by themselves<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The unmissable red and white sign adds that if you\u2019re meeting friends inside, they\u2019ll need to come and collect you at the entrance, a policy that\u2019s in place for the \u2018safety of all guests\u2019.<\/p>\n

Alibi, a cocktail and karaoke bar on Shaw\u2019s road near Altrincham <\/a>Market, has caused quite the stir with its decision to bar lone customers.<\/p>\n

For many, it feels like an attack on single people<\/a>, who already struggle to meet potential dates, or who simply prefer their own company. Social media<\/a> users branded the ban \u2018misguided\u2019 and \u2018sad on so many levels\u2019.<\/p>\n

In a clip posted to the bar\u2019s Instagram<\/a> account, owner Carl Peters, initially explained the policy was for the sake of his staff.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Carl said: \u2018If someone is on their own, it means that they\u2019re not with someone else. So if something happens to them in a late night, busy bar environment, where people are drinking, it\u2019s an absolute nightmare for us to deal with.\u2019<\/p>\n

However, he went on to make some claims about the type of person who might want to enjoy a drink alone.<\/p>\n

It also happens to be the case that sometimes if you let people in on their own, their reason why they\u2019re on their own is that they\u2019ve got no-one to talk to, so they start mithering other groups,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018Because, they\u2019re not just going to sit there in a bar having a drink on their own in silence. That\u2019s when things start to happen and people are like \u201cwho\u2019s this person on their own annoying us?\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2018So, what we do as a venue, is we just eliminate that. Unless you\u2019re with a group and we know who you\u2019re with, then you\u2019re not coming in.\u2019<\/p>\n

The sign also states a dress code, telling customers not to wear sportswear or tracksuits, Stone Island branded clothing, ripped or frayed jeans or clothing which has \u2018roadman vibes\u2019.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hurtful to a lot of single people\u2019<\/h2>\n

Nicola Slawson, author of Single: Living a Complete Life on Your Own Terms, tells Metro<\/strong> that it\u2019s policies like the ones at Alibi that adds to the stigma that single people face.<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019m really shocked, it feels like another way to penalise single people and make them out to be something weird or freaky,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s so many reasons to be on your own and to lump everyone in the same box is quite sickening, it\u2019s really hurtful to a lot of single people,\u2019 she adds.<\/p>\n

The mum feels the ban also exacerbates the social isolation epidemic, and adds there are elderly people in her community who go to the pub alone because it\u2019s the only way they get to experience social connection.<\/p>\n

\u2018I do understand they\u2019re trying to protect people, but you\u2019re just throwing all single people under the bus because there are a few letchy people. It penalises the good single men and women \u2014 I hope this doesn\u2019t catch on.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
