Britain\u2019s military<\/a>\u00a0has been shrinking for years, despite threats posed by\u00a0Russia<\/a>\u2019s war on\u00a0Ukraine<\/a>\u00a0and the tensions in the\u00a0Middle East<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Today, a parliamentary committee laid bare the challenges facing the Government and defence industry, saying the UK \u2018cannot afford to bury our heads in the sand\u2019.<\/p>\n

The dire warning comes after warnings that the\u00a0Ministry of Defence<\/a>\u00a0has no\u00a0\u2018credible plan\u2019<\/a>\u00a0to fund the armed forces the\u00a0government<\/a>\u00a0wants, leaving the\u00a0nation vulnerable<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The committee\u2019s chairman, Labour\u2019s Tan Dhesi, said: \u2018Putin\u2019s brutal invasion of Ukraine, unrelenting disinformation campaigns, and repeated incursions into European airspace mean that we cannot afford to bury our heads in the sand.<\/p>\n

The UK does have manpower, but worries about preparedness in case of the worst possible scenario are increasing.<\/p>\n

Out of a population of more than 68,000,000, only 25,074,962 Brits are fit for service in the military. Currently, around 184,000 are serving actively.<\/p>\n

In April this year, active servicemen in the British Army fell to the lowest number since 1793, at just below 74,000 soldiers.<\/p>\n

32,000 are serving in the Royal Navy and Marines, with around 30,000 in the Royal Air Force,\u00a0The Week reported.<\/a><\/p>\n

When\u00a0Metro\u00a0<\/strong>compared Britain\u2019s military strength to Russia\u2019s, Russia is more powerful \u2013 almost unmatched \u2013 despite continued major losses on the frontline in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

In another damning report, a simulation of a European war showed that the British Army would run out of ammunition in only ten days.<\/p>\n

Dr Robert Johnson of Oxford University mentioned in the report that the UK is still falling short of its \u2018claimed leadership position\u2019.<\/p>\n

If the UK is to help defend Europe and NATO, he said, \u2018it simply does not have the mass, let alone the munitions, at the moment to do the job.\u2019<\/p>\n

Despite this, looking at global rankings, the UK ranks sixth overall; 15th for airpower; 55th for land power \u2013 behind Nato members Germany, Spain, Poland and Romania \u2013 and 31st in fleet strength.<\/p>\n

MPs also renewed their criticism of the MoD\u2019s procurement processes, saying that slow delivery of new systems had caused gaps in military capability.<\/p>\n

Only two of the 46 equipment programmes are currently rated as \u2018highly likely\u2019 to be delivered on time, on budget and on quality.<\/p>\n

Aside from the available manpower,\u00a0British airpower, land power, and naval forces cannot stand up to nations like Russia and China.<\/p>\n

The stark warning from parliament today also cited the UK\u2019s failure to meet its\u00a0NATO<\/a>\u00a0obligations and its heavy reliance on the\u00a0United States<\/a>\u00a0for intel, satellites, troop transport and refuelling of planes.<\/p>\n

Preparedness of the average citizen is also a point of worry when it comes to Britain\u2019s defence, Mr Tan added.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Government cannot shy away from direct engagement with the public. Wars aren\u2019t won just by generals but by the whole of the population getting behind the armed forces and playing our part,\u2019 he stressed.<\/p>\n

\u2018There needs to be a coordinated effort to communicate with the public on the level of threat we face and what to expect in the event of conflict.\u2019<\/p>\n
