An airport in the\u00a0Netherlands<\/a>\u00a0has been shut down after \u2018multiple drones\u2019 were spotted in the area.<\/p>\n

Air traffic at Eindhoven Airport has been suspended and flights are being diverted, including via\u00a0Rotterdam<\/a>,\u00a0Brussels<\/a>\u00a0and Weeze in Germany.<\/p>\n

Ruben Brekelmans, the Dutch defence minister, said on\u00a0X<\/a>\u00a0(formerly Twitter) this evening: \u2018Multiple drones have been spotted at Eindhoven Airport.<\/p>\n

\u2018Civilian and military air traffic has therefore been suspended. Defence\u2019s counter-drone measures are on standby to intervene.\u2019<\/p>\n

Brekelmans said that police and military officers are at the scene.<\/p>\n

\u2018Further investigation is ongoing and we will take action where necessary,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n

Defence officials have declined to specify how many drones were spotted, other than saying it was \u2018multiple\u2019.<\/p>\n

Dozens of people have been left stranded in the departure hall, Dutch broadcaster\u00a0NOS\u00a0<\/a>reports, while hundreds have been sent home.<\/p>\n

The last flight of the evening, a TUI plane from Gran Canaria, was diverted to Brussels Airport.<\/p>\n

Passengers received a text upon landing stating that the aircraft could not land due to drone activity, according to Dutch newspaper\u00a0AD<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Arrival boards<\/a>\u00a0show no flights scheduled to land today or tomorrow, while no planes will depart until tomorrow at 6.55am local time.<\/p>\n

Eindhoven, in the south of the Netherlands, is used for military and civilian purposes.<\/p>\n

Earlier today that the Dutch defence ministry said drones were spotted last night over Volkel Air Base, about 18.6 miles from Eindhoven Airport.<\/p>\n

Royal Netherlands Air Force personnel attempted to shoot them down.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s sighting comes after drones were spotted hovering above airports and naval bases in\u00a0Denmark<\/a>,\u00a0Sweden<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Germany<\/a>\u00a0in recent months.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0unclear if the episodes are linked or who is responsible<\/a>, but the wave put Europe on edge amid increasing tension with Russia.<\/p>\n

Fears that the Kremlin\u2019s war with Ukraine could spill into eastern Europe were high even before the drone sightings \u2013\u00a0Russia flew drones into\u00a0Poland and Romania\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0sent fighter jets into\u00a0Estonian\u00a0airspace<\/a>\u00a0in September.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0Civil Aviation Authority<\/a>, UK and EU airlines must look after you if your flight is delayed or cancelled.<\/p>\n

This includes everything from meals and accommodation to an alternative flight if necessary.<\/p>\n

Citizen\u2019s Advice says<\/a>\u00a0that airlines should also give impacted passengers access to\u00a0phone<\/a>\u00a0calls and emails and, if they offer you a place to stay, organise the journeys between the hotel and the airport.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, the airline will cover this by handing you vouchers at the airport.<\/p>\n

When in doubt, keep any receipts for expenses and claim them back afterwards from the airline.<\/p>\n

But an airline will only cough up money for \u2018reasonable\u2019 expenses. The hotel minibar or penthouse suites likely can\u2019t be expensed.<\/p>\n

If you didn\u2019t book with a UK or EU airline, you\u2019ll need to check their terms and conditions. However, for the most part, airlines should provide meals and accommodation as appropriate.<\/p>\n
